The winningest high school baseball coach in Gaston County history became the 14th person with local ties to be inducted into the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame when Henry Jones and seven others were honored on Saturday at Embassy Suites in Cary.

Jones’ induction class of 2020 had its banquet moved into 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
A six-time state championship-winning baseball coach at Cherryville High School, Jones is a graduate of Shelby High and Gardner-Webb and had a 542-207 baseball coaching record for the Ironmen from 1974 to 2005.
The 34th NCHSAA Hall of Fame class also includes Donald Clark from Snow Hill, Barbara Foxx from Sanford, Norvell Lee from Goldsboro, Fred McDaniel from Wade, Ron Parson from Reidsville, David Rothwell from Statesville and Milt Sherman from Greenville.
Jones also coached basketball, football and cross country during his tenure at Cherryville from 1973 to 2005. After serving one year as an assistant baseball coach, he guided Cherryville to 24 playoff appearances, 11 league titles, six state championships one state runner-up finish during his 32-year tenure at the school.
The state titles came in 1980, 1982, 1992, 1993, 1998 and 2001 and the runner-up finish in 1997. Also a member of the Cherryville, North Carolina Baseball Coaches, Gaston County and Cleveland County sports Hall of Fames, Jones also was selected one of the 100 NCHSAA coaches to remember in 2013.

Gardner-Webb update: The Bulldogs have won four straight after completing a three-game weekend sweep of Big South rival Winthrop on Sunday. Gardner-Webb (18-16, 17-8) is in first place of the Big South Conference entering Tuesday’s 3 p.m. game at Winthrop.
College men’s volleyball
NCAA tournament: Conference Carolinas tournament champion Belmont Abbey will face Penn State in the opening round of the 2021 tournament.
The Crusaders (15-7), in their first-ever appearance, draw the No. 8 Nittany Lions, who won the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association title on Saturday, on May 3 in Columbus, Ohio. Penn State (21-3), twice winners of the national title, are in the postseason for the first time since 2017.
College men’s tennis
Conference Carolinas final: Top-seeded Mount Olive defeated Belmont Abbey 4-1 in Sumter, S.C., for the league tournament championship. Belmont Abbey fell to 14-11 overall and was 7-1 in the league.
College women’s lacrosse
Conference Carolinas final: Riley D’Andrea scored five goals, but Belmont Abbey lost 23-16 to top-seeded Mount Olive on Sunday in the league championship game. It dropped the Lady Crusaders to 11-4 on the season.
