Saturday’s roundup: High school football, soccer and lacrosse, Arena football and College basketball

By Richard Walker

A battle of unbeatens came down to a fumble recovery in the end zone on a late-game two-point conversion as Kings Mountain edged Shelby 36-35 on Saturday night at Blanton Memorial Stadium.

Tykel Smith came up with the key recovery late in the the fourth quarter as the Mountaineers overcome a 28-14 third quarter deficit to stay unbeaten to 5-0 overall. It also gave Kings Mountain its first win at Shelby since 1986 and ended the Golden Lions’ school-record 39-game home winning streak.

Shelby still leads the all-time series that began in 1923 by a 72-20-7 margin.

Both teams had explosive plays.

Shelby’s touchdowns came on Omar Phillips’ 74-yard touchdown run, Luke Williams’ 16-yard TD pass from Gabe Huitt, Marquise Adams’ 76-yard touchdown pass from Huitt, Tyler Arrington’s 46-yard touchdown pass from Huitt and Adams’ 60-yard fumble return.

Kings Mountain’s touchdowns came on Ethan Reid’s 2-yard run, Marcus Odums’ 74-yard blocked field goal return, Jaylen Mims’ 2-yard run, Dameon Wilson’s 11-yard run and Rashaard Brooks’ 3-yard run.

Smith’s fumble recovery came after Kings Mountain elected to go for two after a Shelby offsides penalty. Shelby took its 28-14 on Huitt’s second and third touchdown passes of the game and retook the team 35-28 on Adams’ fumble return.

Shelby outgained Kings Mountain 348-293 in total yardage.

Kings Mountain visits Forestview next Thursday in its next game. Shelby (4-1) hosts South Point on Thursday.
