Saturday’s roundup: High school baseball, soccer, softball and tennis, Pro hockey, College football and soccer

As local teams prepare for the end of the first round of the abbreviated 2021 high school baseball schedule, five local teams remain unbeaten: Cherryville in the Southern Piedmont 1A Conference, Crest and Kings Mountain in the Big South 3A and East Lincoln in the South Fork 2A and Mountain Island Charter in the PAC 7 1A.

One of those teams will take a loss on Tuesday as Crest visits Kings Mountain in a huge Big South Conference matchup. Both are 5-0 in league play and Kings Mountain is 6-0 overall.

Cherryville (6-0, 5-0), East Lincoln (6-0, 6-0) and Mountain Island Charter (6-0, 6-0) are the area’s unbeatens with R-S Central (6-0, 6-0) the unbeaten Southwestern 2A Conference leader.

Pro hockey

The Carolina Hurricanes begin their eighth Stanley Cup playoff pursuit after winning their fourth division title in 25 seasons in North Carolina.

The Hurricanes won the 2006 Stanley Cup championship, advanced to the 2002 Stanley Cup finals and were in the Eastern Conference finals in 2019. They are in the playoffs for a franchise-record third straight season.

The Hurricanes (36-12-8) are the No. 1 seed in the Central Division and host the No. 4 seed Nashville Predators (31-23-2) in a best-of-seven first round series that begins Monday at Raleigh’s PNC Arena at 8 p.m.
