Saturday’s roundup: College basketball tournament pairings and results, prep football standings

Belmont Abbey College’s women’s basketball team advanced to a NCAA Division II regional final for the first time in school history Saturday night with a dominating second half effort in a 74-59 win over Tusculum in the Southeast Regional semifinals.

Playing on Carson-Newman’s Holt Field House, the top-seeded Crusaders outscored the No. 4 seed Pioneers 50-31 in the second half after trailing 28-24 at halftime.

The Crusaders (23-2) now face a familiar opponent in Conference Carolinas rival Barton (14-2) at 6 p.m. in Monday’s regional title game. Monday’s winner advances to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight in Columbus, Ohio, March 23 to 26.

Barton is the last team to beat the Abbey before the Lady Crusaders began their current 19-game winning streak. Belmont Abbey avenged that 83-72 home loss on Jan. 15 with an 83-65 home victory on Jan. 16 and later edged the Bulldogs 68-62 in overtime in last Sunday’s conference tournament title game.

Maria Kuhlman’s 22 points led coach Jason Williams’ team on Saturday night. Allie Downing added 14 points and nine rebounds, Brittany Autry 10 points and Hannah Roney 12 assists.

Also on Saturday, Belmont Abbey’s men’s basketball team found out it’ll play league rival Emmanuel, Ga., for a sixth time this season after the Lions edged Queens 80-78 in a Southeast Regional semifinal at Harrogate, Tenn.

The Crusaders have won three of the first five meetings between the teams this season, including an 82-70 win at Emmanuel last Sunday for the Conference Carolinas tournament title.

Belmont Abbey and Emmanuel will play at approximately 7:45 p.m. Sunday night – or after the other regional semifinal that starts at 5 p.m. between host Lincoln Memorial and Tusculum.
