Saturday’s roundup: College and prep basketball results

The Charlotte 49ers used six players for much of the game Saturday before coming away with an 82-72 win over Middle Tennessee in Conference USA action at Halton Arena.

The conteset was the annual #Play4Kay game to honor former N.C. State women’s basketball head coach Kay Yow and the breast cancer fundraising efforts that have gone on since her death in 2009.

Charlotte wore its pink uniforms and won the program’s seventh straight win in the annual game – a streak that dates to a 2015 Valentine’s Day win over Texas-San Antonio.

Senior Octavia Jett-Wilson poured in a team-high 21 points and junior Jaxmin Harris matched her career-high with 20 points and also had 10 rebounds.

Middle Tennessee fell to 12-5, 10-2 with the loss while Charlotte improved to 6-7, 5-3.

Belmont Abbey 58, King 57: Brittany Autry posted a double-double, helping the visiting Crusaders improve to 12-2 overall and 8-1 in Conference Carolinas while winning its eighth straight game. Autry had 14 points, 14 rebounds, two blocked shots and two steals. Keyanna Spivey added 13 points and six rebounds.

College men’s basketball
Middle Tennessee 73, Charlotte 60: Milos Supica (14 points, 9 rebounds), Jahmir Young (14 points), Jordan Shepherd (13 points, 5 rebounds) and Brice Williams (10 points) led the 49ers (9-9, 5-5) in the Conference USA game.

King 78, Belmont Abbey 72: Charles Solomon scored 23 points for the Abbey (9-3, 7-2) in the road Conference Carolinas loss.

High school boys basketball
Huss 73, Kings Mountain 62 (Friday): J.J. Moore (18 points, 4 assists), Ray Mackey (14 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists), Noah Caulder (12 points), Yau’Mell Scott (10 points, 14 rebounds) and Cory Adams (8 points, 5 assists) led Huss to the Big South 3A Conference victory.
