Gastonia’s Nate Hinton not only made his NBA debut this season but he’s playing for a playoff team as the Dallas Mavericks finished fifth in the Western Conference and will open their playoff series against the No. 4 seed Los Angeles Clippers later this week.

Hinton, a 2018 Gaston Day School graduate who also played at Forestview, played in 21 games this season for the 42-30 Mavericks. He averaged 2.0 points, 0.4 rebounds and 0.4 assists with career-highs of eight points on May 7 against Cleveland and May 11 at Memphis.

Also with Dallas as a 13th-year assistant coach is Darrell Armstrong, a 1986 Ashbrook High graduate who began coaching after a 14-year playing career.

Gastonia’s other NBA player this season, Hassan Whiteside, averaged 8.1 points, 6.0 rebounds and 1.3 blocks in 36 games (four starts) for the Sacramento Kings.

 

Pro baseball

Former East Lincoln High standout Alec Burleson has been playing professional baseball less than a month and he’s already gotten a promotion.

Burleson, a 2017 East Lincoln graduate who played for East Carolina from 2018 to 2020, was promoted from Class A Peoria to Class AA Springfield on Monday by the St. Louis Cardinals organization.

Burleson, a second-round draft pick of the Cardinals in the 2020 draft, hit .286 with four home runs and 10 RBIs in 11 games in Peoria.

 

College football

Omari Hunt of South Point has signed to play college football at Virginia University of Lynchburg.

Pro golf

Shelby’s Connor Brown shot a 72 at a U.S. Open qualifier in Pinehurst on Monday.

The 2021 Southwestern 2A Conference player of the year, Brown is a UNC-Greensboro signee.

 

Pro hockey

The Carolina Hurricanes are in the midst of their Stanley Cup playoff pursuit after winning their fourth division title in 25 seasons in North Carolina. The Hurricanes won the 2006 Stanley Cup championship, advanced to the 2002 Stanley Cup finals and were in the Eastern Conference finals in 2019. Carolina is 36-12-8 this season and are the No. 1 seed in the Central Division.
