Lincoln Charter ended Cherryville’s season-opening 12-game winning streak as well as clinching at least a share of the Southern Piedmont 1A Conference baseball title on Tuesday night.

The Eagles knocked off Cherryville 5-1 at Fraley Field.

It gave Lincoln Charter a 12-1 overall record and 11-1 league record entering its Friday non-conference regular season finale at perennial power South Caldwell.

Winning pitcher Mason Smith threw a six-hitter with 14 strikeouts and also had two hits and two RBIs to lead the Eagles’ offense, which also got two hits and one RBI each from Max McCreary and Davis al-Hussani.

Cherryville, which won 4-3 at Lincoln Charter on May 14 in their first meeting this season, falls to 12-1 overall and 10-1 in the league. The Ironmen can clinch a tie with Lincoln Charter for the league title with a home win over Bessemer City on Friday night.

Landon Hahn (3 hits, triple, 1 run), Ty Heavner (1 hit, 1 RBI) and Will Fowler (1 hit) led the Ironmen.

Cherryville’s loss ended the second-longest unbeaten streak to open a season in school history; The Ironmen went 13-0 in 2017 before losing at Lincoln Charter.

College baseball

Former Crest standout Logan McNeely had three hits, including a double, with one run and one RBI as Wingate stayed alive in the NCAA Division II World Series with a 3-2 win over Southern New Hampshire at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary.

Logan McNeely has been Wingate’s top hitter and the NCAA Division II College World Series.

McNeely, a 2017 Crest High graduate, is now five for seven at the plate during the Bulldogs’ two World Series games.

Wingate (35-13) plays another elimination game on Wednesday at 2 p.m. against Seton Hill.

Austin Mitchell (North Gaston 2018) and Brett Walls (Cherryville 2020) also are on the Bulldogs’ roster.

Rock Hill’s Legion Collegiate beat Andrew Jackson 10-7 on Tuesday night at Lancaster to win the S.C. High School League Class 2A state baseball championship.

Legion Collegiate is in its first full season of baseball and its head coach is former South Point High and Gaston Braves standout Devon Lowery.

High school basketball

East Lincoln Awards: The Mustangs’ varsity boys basketball team had their year end banquet and the following players received awards:
Drew Bean – Co-MVP, Logan Craig – Most Improved, Jeremiah Jones – Co-MVP, Tyler Mizzell – Spark Plug Award
Bean and Jones, were the leading scorers on the team and both were named to the South Fork 2A All-Conference team for the 2021 season. Jones also was named All-District 10 which represents Lincoln, Gaston, Catawba, Burke, McDowell, and Alexander counties. Craig led the Mustangs in rebounding and always guarded the other team’s biggest player. He also averaged over 10 points a game. And Mizzell provided toughness and intelligence at the guard position and was willing to do the little things that make a team successful.

Golf tournament

The Rutherford County Sports Hall of Fame is holding registration for the T. Max Champion Memorial Golf Tournament presented by Hardin’s Drugs. The event will be held Aug. 6 at Cleghorn Golf and Sports Club in Rutherfordton and will consist of three-person teams and a registration of $75 per player. The proceeds will benefit the RCSHOF Scholarship Fund and a prize of $600 will be awarded to the winning team. For more information on the T.
