Monday’s roundup: High school basketball and high school soccer, Gardner-Webb basketball and ACC All-Academic honors

Visiting South Point edged rival Stuart Cramer 60-57 in boys high school basketball on Monday night after the host Storm had won the boys junior varsity and girls basketball games.

Garrett Hunt’s 17 points led South Point (4-2) to the boys victory while Mason Craig (15 points), Justin Rocquemore (14 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists) and Frankie Verdezas (9 points, 5 rebounds) led Cramer (0-6).

Cramer won the girls game 34-32 as Ranija Hamilton had 11 points and six rebounds and Dasia Harris had 11 points and nine rebounds for the Storm (1-4). South Point was led by Lexi Birtwhistle’s 15 points and Kam Shipman’s six.

And Cramer won the JV boys game 43-30 to even its record at 3-3 behind Isaiah Foster (20 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals), Taelan Whitley (4 points, 10 rebounds, 2 blocks) and Owen Sloan (4 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists). Jake McMahon’s 10 points led South Point.

High school boys soccer
East Lincoln 2, Lake Norman Charter 0: Blake Swanson and Helmut Rojas each scored a goal, Landon Graden had both assists and Will White had the goalkeeping shutout for the Mustangs (1-0), who play at Lincolnton in their next game.

Christ the King 8, Piedmont Community Charter 0

Forestview at Crest: Postponed to Tuesday.

North Gaston at Huss: Postponed to Tuesday.

South Point at Burns: Postponed to Tuesday.

Shelby at East Gaston: Postponed to Tuesday.

College men’s basketball
Gardner-Webb 80, Charleston Southern 71: Gardner-Webb won its third straight game as senior Jaheam Cornwall scored a game-high 21 points and D’Maurian Williams added 18 off the bench in an 80-71 win over visiting Charleston Southern.

With the win, the Runnin’ Bulldogs (6-9, 5-5) swept a Big South series for the first time this season.

Gardner-Webb next plays on Friday and Saturday in a two-game road road series at Radford at 6 p.m. each day.

Big South Conference honor: Earlier Monday, Williams was named freshman of the week after the 6-foot-5 guard led Gardner-Webb to a 2-1 week by averaging 18.7 points, 2.7 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.7 steals.

College women’s basketball
Conference Carolinas honor: Belmont Abbey forward Keyanna Spivey has been named the player of the week after scoring 34 points in three Crusaders’ victories last week.

Big South Conference honor: Gardner-Webb’s Alasia Smith was named freshman of the week after averaging 15.5 points, 8.0 rebounds and 5.0 steals in two games last week.

College football
Former Shelby High and Clover High standouts were named to the 2020 All-ACC Academic football team on Monday.
Virginia Tech’s Dax Hollifield, a 2018 Shelby High graduate, and Wake Forest’s Nick Sciba (Clover 2018) were honored.
