Belmont Abbey College’s historic men’s volleyball season came to an end Monday as the Crusaders fell three sets to none decision to two-time NCAA champion Penn State in the opening round of the NCAA championships in Columbus, Ohio.
The Abbey, which won its first Conference Carolinas championship to advance, ends its season with a 15-8 record.
Andrew Kohut (10 kills, 6 digs), Matteo Miselli (9 kills), Brennan Davis (28 assists), Daniel Cerqua (6 digs) and Brian Long (6 kills, 2 aces, 1 block) led coach Nolan Albrecht’s team.
Penn State improved to 22-3 with the victory.
Pro baseball
Gastonia’s Wes Helms will finally get to make his Class AAA Charlotte Knights managerial debut on Tuesday when the team opens its 2021 season at Jacksonville.
A 1994 Ashbrook High graduate and 13-year major leaguer, Helms and the Knights had their 2020 season cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Helms guided the Class AA Birmingham Barons to a 64-72 record in his first year as a manager in 2019.
The Knights will play a 142-game schedule, including 70 home games at Truist Field in uptown Charlotte.

High school girls soccer
Watauga 5, Crest 3: Cadence Walker (3 goals), Alexis Marshall (2 assists) and Kalee Varga (1 assist) led Crest, which finished 12-2 after winning the second conference title in school history this season.

Western Carolina: Former Shelby High standout Dorian Davis announced on his twitter account on Monday that he has placed in his name in the transfer portal after earning Southern Conference All-Freshman honors as a defensive back at Western Carolina.
A 2019 Shelby High graduate, Davis had 42 tackles and one fumble recovery in nine games for the Catamounts.
