Late free throw shooting lifted Campbell past Gardner-Webb 63-57 Monday night in the Big South Conference basketball quarterfinals.
The loss ends Gardner-Webb’s season at 11-15 overall.
The Runnin’ Bulldogs of coach Tim Craft finished fifth place or better in the league for a sixth straight season.
In Monday’s tournament game, Gardner-Webb was outscored 10-6 after taking a 51-50 lead with 3 1-2 minutes to play. Campbell hit six straight free throws in the final 31 seconds to prevent a Bulldogs comeback.
Jordan Sears had a career-high 20 points to lead Gardner-Webb. D’Maurian Williams added 13 points.

Gardner-Webb swept Big South Conference football honors on Monday as running back Narii Gaither was named offensive player of the week, defensive tackle Janathian Turner was named defensive player of the week, return specialist Devron Harper is special teams player of the week and defensive end Ty French was named freshman of the week. That quartet helpd Gardner-Webb beat No. 24 Elon 42-20 in the Bulldogs’ season opener.
College wrestling
Seventeen South Atlantic Conference athletes have qualified for the March 12-13 NCAA Division II championships at America’s Convention Center in St. Louis, Mo., including two Belmont Abbey wrestlers. Ben Fielding qualified in the 133-pound weight class and Mitch Dean qualified in the 165-pound weight class.
College women’s lacrosse
Belmont Abbey attacker Mackenzie Kaderabek and defender Sarah Schaefer have been named the Conference Carolinas offensive and defensive players of the week.
