Former Crest baseball standout Jack Millen was honored Monday as the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy athletic department Julie Berke Rookie of the Year Award male winner for the 2020-21 season.

Millen, a 2020 Crest High graduate, also was named the Skyline Conference Rookie of the Year after he helped the Mariners advance to the NCAA Division III regionals after winning their first-ever Skyline Conference championship.

Millen had a team-leading .354 batting average and 19 runs batted in. He also ranked second on the team with 17 runs scored and 28 hits, while coming in at third on the squad with eight stolen bases and fifth with a .405 slugging percentage.

 

 

College baseball

First round pairings have been set for the upcoming College World Series in Omaha, Neb., where N.C. State will be making its third appearance in the event; The Wolfpack previously advanced to the CWS in 1968 and 2013.

Cherryville 14, Cramer 13: Blake Splawn had a walkoff RBI single to help Cherryville improve to 2-0 on the season. Will Blackburn was the winning pitcher for Post 100, which got a grand slam home run from Easton Dellinger.

 

 

Pro baseball

The Gastonia Honey Hunters begin a three-game home series with Southern Maryland that begins on Tuesday at 6:50 p.m.

Gastonia enters the series with a 7-7 record.
