Monday’s roundup: College baseball, High school football, girls soccer, baseball and softball

Former Lincolnton High and Cherryville Post 100 standout Robbie Cowie picked up his eighth save of the year on Monday night at first-year Atrium Health Ballpark in Kannapolis to preserve Catawba’s 5-4 win over Belmont Abbey.

A 2018 Lincolnton High graduate, Cowie struck out two of the three batters he faced for Catawba (30-7, 24-6), which had wrapped up the South Atlantic Conference regular season title over the weekend.

Belmont Abbey (20-14) was playing its first game as the new facility that opened with a March 23 college game that saw the Charlotte 49ers beat Appalachian State 15-5.

 

High school football

Twenty-four Lincoln County players and one coach were honored by the South Fork 2A Conference for their excellence in the winter/spring season.

West Lincoln earned eight all-conference selections, a specialist of the year honor for Mason Huitt and a coach of the year honor for Darren Ponder after the Rebels bounced back from an 0-2 start in league play to advance to the postseason as the league’s No. 2 seed.

Huitt, Mason Avery, Samuel Duncan, Curtis Goins, Hunter Leonhardt, Tubby Neal, Ricky Reynolds and Luke Willis all earned all-league
Luke Willis for West Lincoln.

Third-place East Lincoln was led by conference defensive player of the year Ben Cutter. Cutter and Mustangs’ teammates Paul Menegay, Lucas McConnell, Trent Smith, Austin Smith, Jeremiah Jones, Markell Clark and Tyler Mizzell all earned all-league honors.

Lincolnton and North Lincoln had four all-conference honorees apiece – Amontre Finger, Bernard Wingate, Andre Smith and Connor Williams for Lincolnton and Daniel Carter, Jack Carter, Seth Whitley and Kyle Kovalchuk for North Lincoln.

Conference champion Maiden had a league-high nine all-conference selections in Daniel Harris, Brennan James, Cameron Day, Amarion Craig,
Ethan Rhodes, Dru McClough, Aaron Lefevers, D.J. Spring and Chris Culliver.

Rounding out the rest of the all-league team were offensive player of the year Allan Shade of Newton-Conover and Red Devils’ teammats
Xavion Coulter, Ryan Walker, Quincey Spain and Zane Redmond and Maddox Spires, Cole Howard, Terick Bumgarner and Dylan Thompson from Bandys.

 

High school girls soccer

Crest 9, Huss 0: Madison Setzer (4 goals, 1 assist), Jillian Hux (2 goals), Kalee Varga (2 goals), Alexis Marshall (1 goal, 1 assist), Cadence Walker (3 assists), Isabella Sanchez (1 assist) and goalkeeper Emma Harrill led Crest (10-1, 9-1), which visits North Gaston on Wednesday at 5 p.m.

High school softball

Cherryville 11, Piedmont CC 1: Winning pitcher Raegon Nowoweicki struck out six and threw a two-hitter and Aleigha Whisnant (3-4, double, 3 RBIs) and Rileigh Kiser (1-3, triple, 2 RBIs) led the offense for Cherryville (5-5, 3-1).

The Denver Nuggets Travel boys’ basketball teams will be holding tryouts for the following teams:
7th-11th Grade Boys Monday, April 19th and Thursday, April 22nd and Monday, April 27th and Thursday, April 29th from 6:30-8 p.m. in the competition gym at East Lincoln High School (6471 Hwy 73 Denver, NC 28037)
