In Friday’s roundup: High school volleyball, G-W basketball, Kings Mountain QB invited to walkon

South Point improved to 7-1 overall and 6-1 in the Southwestern 2A Conference with a three to one high school volleyball victory at East Gaston on Friday.
The Red Raiders won 25-17, 25-23, 20-25 and 25-22 behind Anna Dunbar (20 Kills, 21 Digs, 3 Aces), Emily Revels (44 Assists), Chloe Ratliff (3 Aces, 10 Kills, 12 Digs) and Kailee McAlister (11 Digs).
South Point also won the junior varsity match 2-0.

Forestview 3, North Gaston 1 (26-24, 20-25, 25-15, 25-16)

Bandys 3, Lincolnton 0 (25-14, 25-8, 25-10)

Highland Tech 3, Cherryville 0 (25-11, 25-11, 25-12)

Kings Mountain 3, North Gaston 0 (25-11, 25-10, 25-6 from Thursday): The Mountaineers improved to 8-0 in the Big South 3A Conference behind Aaliyah Byers (11 kills, 18 service points, 5 digs, 4 serve receptions), Meile Songaila (11 kills, 8 service points, 9 serve receptions), Emma Goff (4 kills, 3 digs, 10 service points), Paige Bagwell (14 service points, 5 digs, 13 assists), Kyann Crocker (5 service points, 17 digs, 6 assists, 6 serve receptions) and Ashlyn Wood (5 service points, 4 digs, 12 assists).

College men’s basketball
Gardner-Webb 88, VMI 77: The Runnin’ Bulldogs lead 24-6 early then survived a VMI rally before pulling away for their first win of the season.
Jaheam Cornwall scored a season-high 21 points for Gardner-Webb (1-3) in their 2020-21 season home opener. Jacob Falko added 16 points, Ludovic Dufeal 11 points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots, Lance Terry 10 points and Jamaine Mann 10 points.
The Bulldogs play again on Monday at Florida State at 8 p.m.

Out of action: Charlotte 49ers head coach Ron Sanchez will miss the team’s next two games as a result of contact tracing related to the COVID-19 virus. Sanchez will miss Saturday’s home game against North Carolina A&T and Tuesday’s road game at George Washington. Assistant coach Aaron Fearne will assume on-floor head coaching responsibilities while Sanchez is absent.

College women’s basketball
Gardner-Webb 47, Presbyterian 44 (Thursday): The visiting Bulldogs survived a Presbyterian rally in the final minutes to take their first win of the season.
Jhessyka Williams and Lauren Bevis hit two free throws apiece in the final 21 seconds after the Blue Hose (2-2, 1-1) had twice closed within a point.
Gardner-Webb plays again at Vanderbilt on Sunday at 3 p.m.

College football
Ball State 38, Buffalo 28: Aapri Washington (Mountain Island Charter 2017 graduate) made two tackles for Buffalo (5-1) in their Mid-American Conference championship game in Detroit.

College commitment: Kings Mountain High quarterback Ethan Reid tweeted on Friday that he will be a recruited walkon at Appalachian State. Reid passed for 2,840 yards and 44 touchdowns in 2019 when the Mountaineers went 12-3 and advanced to the Western N.C. 3AA championship game.

College women’s soccer
Belmont Abbey was selected the favorite in the Conference Carolinas preseason poll, the conference office announced on Friday.
The Abbey returns 28 players from a team that went 12-5-3 last season, including three players that were considered players to watch this season – junior goalkeeper Lauryn Harding, sophomore forward Goose Andrews and senior defender Madison Knutsen.
