Hometown heroes: Local pair leads Appalachian State into Sun Belt Conference tournament, other college basketball and college football

Former Piedmont Community Charter and Kings Mountain High School star Adrian Delph is the leading scorer for Appalachian State as they begin Sun Belt Conference tournament play on Friday night at 8:30 p.m. against Arkansas Little Rock.

Delph, a 2018 Kings Mountain High graduate, is averaging 12.4 points in addition to 4.2 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 24 starts this season for the Mountaineers (13-11, 7-8), who are the fourth-seeded team in the tournament.

Also Appalachian State, former East Gaston and Gaston Day standout James Lewis is averaging 8.9 points and 5.6 rebounds in 23 games (19 starts).

College football

Two of the top tacklers for Western Carolina so far in the 2021 winter/spring season have been Trevor Childers (East Lincoln 2017) and Dorian Davis (Shelby 2019).

Childers has 16 tackles and Davis 12 in the Catamounts first two losses entering Saturday’s 1 p.m. Southern Conference home game against VMI.

Tre Jolly (Shelby 2019) has one tackle in two games for WCU.

More college basketball

Milligan: Levontae Knox (Lincoln Charter 2019) recently was named to the All-Appalachian Athletic Conference defensive team. Milligan finished its season at 11-10 overall and 10-8 in the ACC following a conference tournament quarterfinal loss.

Elon: Evonna McGill (Ashbrook 2018) is averaging 8.6 points and 4.3 rebounds in 14 games (11 starts) for the Phoenix (7-7, 3-5), who host Colonial Athletic Association rival College of Charleston on Friday at 5:30 p.m.

Connecticut: Former Ashbrook standout Isaiah Whaley is averaging 7.9 points, 6.2 rebounds and 2.8 blocks in 19 starts for the Huskies (13-6, 10-6), who close their Big East Conference regular season schedule on Saturday at noon at home against Georgetown.
