High school roundup: Gaston Day basketball stays unbeaten, Cleveland CC cross country competes in nationals and HS volleyball openers

High school boys basketball

Gaston Day’s Chris Britt (middle) is honored for scoring his 1,000th career high school point during the Spartans’ win on Tuesday.

Gaston Day 84, Statesville Christian 62: The Spartans improved to 3-0 on a night in which Chris Britt surpassed 1,000 points for his high school career. Gaston Day visits High Point Westchester Country Day on Friday in its next game.

Carmel Christian 75, Gaston Christian 54: The Eagles fell to 1-3 and play again Friday at Asheville School.

High school girls basketball

Gaston Day 48, Statesville Christian 41: The Spartans improved to 2-0.

College cross country

NJCAA nationals: Noah Lesser and Jonas Guffey of Cleveland Community College competed in the National Junior College Athletic Association national championships in Fort Dodge, Iowa last Saturday.

At the NJCAA national cross country championships hosted by Iowa Central Community College, Cleveland Community College was represented by runner Noah Jonas, head coach Steve McCachren and runner Jonas Guffey. [CCC photo]
Lesser’s time of 29:02.3 over the 8K course broke the school record, which he set earlier in the season, by three tenths of a second. And Guffey finished with a time of 30:16, which was a personal best over an 8K course.

Both Lesser and Guffey were named to the All-Region 10 team with Lesser was named the Region 10 DII Runner of the Year.

High school volleyball

Avery County 3, Cherryville 1 (18-25, 27-25 25-23, 25-17): Rileigh Kiser (5 aces, 31 assists, 11 digs), Jamarra Wall (11 kills) and Megan Smith (11 digs) led Cherryville in its opening match. The 0-1 Ironmen host Bessemer City on Thursday in its next match.
Avery County’s JV team won 25-5, 25-15.

Crest 3, Forestview 0: The Big South 3A Conference and season-opener for both teams.

East Lincoln 3, Lake Norman Charter 1 (23-25, 25-16, 25-18, 25-12): East Lincoln won its South Fork 2A Conference and season-opener and hosts North Lincoln on Monday in its next match.
East Lincoln’s JV team won 16-25, 25-19, 15-5.

North Lincoln 3, West Lincoln 0: North Lincoln hosts Lake Norman Charter on Thursday in its next match. West Lincoln visits Maiden in its next match on Thursday.

Newton-Conover 3, Lincolnton 0: The South Fork 2A Conference and season-opener for both teams.

Highland Tech 3, Bessemer City 0: The Southern Piedmont 1A Conference and season-opener for both teams.

Lincoln Charter 3, Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy 0: The Southern Piedmont 1A Conference and season-opener for both teams.
