Friday’s roundup: High school football and soccer, middle school football, college basketball tournament pairings and results

Chase threatened one of the longest streaks in national high school history on Friday before Shelby rallied for a 47-41 home win.

Chase (1-2) has still never beaten Shelby in a rivalry that started in 1959. The Golden Lions’ series lead is now 53-0-1 with the tie coming in 1968.

The visiting Trojans led 20-7 and 27-14 in the first half and were ahead 41-39 before Omar Phillips’ third touchdown run of the game put Shelby ahead for the first time and provided the victory for the unbeaten Golden Lions (3-0), who visit Burns next Friday.

Crest 48, Ashbrook 6: The Chargers (3-0) rolled to a homecoming win over the visiting Green Wave. Crest visits Huss next week and AShrook hosts Kings Mountain.

St. Stephens 30, Bessemer City 0: The Yellow Jackets dropped the non-conference road game. Bessemer City (1-2) hosts Highland Tech next week.

Cherryville 33, Highland Tech 12: Cooper Sloan had 148 yards rushing and three touchdowns and Landon Hahn had two pass interceptions for the Ironmen (1-2), who host Community School of Davidson next week.

Burns 54, East Rutherford 7: The Bulldogs (3-0) stayed unbeaten in their home opener.

Kings Mountain 35, Huss 0: The host Mountaineers (2-0) visit Ashbrook next week.

Bandys 52, Lincolnton 8: The visiting Wolves, who fell to 1-2, host West Lincoln next week.

West Lincoln 27, Newton-Conover 21: The Rebels rallied to beat the visiting Red Devils and improve to 1-2.

North Gaston at Forestview: Postponed

East Lincoln 40, North Lincoln 30: The host Mustangs (3-0) stayed unbeaten entering next week’s game at Bandys. North Lincoln (2-1) visits Maiden next week.

R-S Central 56, East Gaston 27: The host Warriors (0-3) visit Chase next week.

South Point 42, Cramer 24: Hunter Hogue, Will Rhinehart and Trevon Jones were standouts for the Red Raiders (2-1), who visit East Rutherford next week.

Thomas Jefferson 25, Mountain Island Charter 21: The visiting Gryphons (3-0) knocked off the Raptors (1-2), who host R-S Central next week.

High school soccer

The N.C. High School Athletic Association state playoff pairings will be announced on Saturday and five teams have clinched playoff berths and two others hold out hopes for getting a chance – Big South 3A Conference champion Forestview, Southwestern 2A Conference South Point, South Fork 2A Conference champion East Lincoln, Big South 3A runner-up Cramer, Southwestern 2A runner-up South Point and possibly 3rd-place finishers Ashbrook (Big South) and Lincolnton (South Fork).

Forestview 4, Cramer 1 (Thursday): Ethan Frizzell and Tyler McMurray scored two goals apiece as Forestview completed a perfect 12-0 regular season.

The Big South Conference announced on Friday that Gardner-Webb’s home football game against Monmouth that is scheduled for March 20 has been postponed due to a COVID-19 pause in the Gardner-Webb program.
