Gastonia’s Harold Varner III missed the cut by one shot as he finished with a two-day score of three-over-par 145.
A 2008 Forestview High graduate, Varner started on No. 10 Friday and eagled No. 7, birdied Nos. 13, 15 and 9, bogeyed Nos. 11, 14 and 3 and double bogeyed Nos. 17 and 1.
College women’s basketball
Belmont Abbey’s Allie Downing and Maria Kuhlman have been named to Academic All-District for women’s basketball, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Friday. Both players are repeat selections for a year ago and make up a third of the six-player team covering Conference Carolinas, Peach Belt, South Atlantic Conferences.
A senior from New Madison, Ohio, Downing averaged 13.1 points, 6.2 rebounds and 2.0 assists during her career and was a three-time All-Conference Carolinas selection.
A senior from Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., Kuhlman averaging 14.0 points, 4.2 rebounds and 2.0 assists during her career and was a three-time All-Conference Carolinas selection.

The Cougars won their fourth straight state title in a 14-7 victory and capped a playoff run that began shortly after the April 1 death of longtime Catholic coach Jim Oddo.
Catholic scored all of its points in the first half and limited Havelock to 201 yards of total offense in the game.
The Cougars’ Liam Barbee was named the game’s Most Valuable Player, leading all players with 13 tackles on the night. Connor Dougherty racked up 11 tackles for the Cougars, earning Most Outstanding Defensive Player honors for the game. The two players’ efforts helped to stymie one of the most potent offenses in 3A football this year.

The Grimsley Whirlies defense forced four turnovers and limited Cardinal Gibbons to 250 yards total offense on their way to a 28-8 victory in the 4A State Championship Game. It is the school’s first state title since 1960 when the school was named Greensboro High School; It became Grimsley in 1962.
In what appeared to settle into a defensive struggle in the early going, the game’s Most Valuable Player, as selected by the media, was Grimsley quarterback Alonza Barnett who opened the scoring on a five yard touchdown run with 1:27 to go in the opening quarter. Barnett’s run helped the Whirlies capitalize on the first of the Crusaders’ turnovers, plunging into the endzone to cap a four play, 26 yard drive.
