Friday’s roundup: College baseball, Prep baseball, Pro baseball and hockey, Legion baseball

A pair of North Carolina schools that haven’t won an ACC tournament in years and a pair of teams with titles within the last 10 years square off today in the ACC baseball semifinals.

Duke, which has never won an ACC tournament and hasn’t won an ACC baseball title since 1961, meets Virginia at 1 p.m. in one semifinal; Virginia routed Notre Dame 14-1 on Friday to clinch Pool A and won its fourth ACC title in 2011.

And N.C. State, which has won five ACC championships with the last coming in 1992, meets Georgia Tech at 5 p.m. in the other semifinal; Georgia Tech and won its ninth ACC title in 2014.

Pro baseball

The Lancaster Barnstormers beat the Gastonia Honey Hunters 6-3 on Friday night in the second Atlantic League of Professional Baseball game of the season for both teams.

Gastonia (0-2) will look for its first win on Saturday at 6:50 p.m. against Lancaster at Caromont Health Care Stadium in Gastonia.

College baseball

Big South tournament: Campbell is the top seed for the 2021 Ingles Big South Baseball Championship to be played Thursday through Saturday at Fayetteville’s SEGRA Stadium.

The two-time defending champion Campbell finished 28-9 in the league for a third straight regular season title. USC Upstate (28-12) finished second and Gardner-Webb (27-13) finished third.

Conference USA tournament: After winning its first regular season Conference USA title in history, No. 20 Charlotte is the top seeded team in the 2021 Air Force Reserve Conference USA Baseball Championship at the brand new J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park in Ruston, La., on Wednesday through Sunday.

Charlotte finished the regular season with a 39-17 overall record and 24-8 Conference USA record after winning two of three games from UNC-Wilmington this weekend.

Pro hockey

The Carolina Hurricanes are in the midst of a Stanley Cup playoff pursuit after winning their fourth division title in 25 seasons in North Carolina. The Hurricanes won the 2006 Stanley Cup championship, advanced to the 2002 Stanley Cup finals and were in the Eastern Conference finals in 2019. Carolina is 36-12-8 this season and are the No. 1 seed in the Central Division.

Golf tournament

The Rutherford County Sports Hall of Fame is holding registration for the T. Max Champion Memorial Golf Tournament presented by Hardin’s Drugs. The event will be held Aug. 6 at Cleghorn Golf and Sports Club in Rutherfordton and will consist of three-person teams and a registration of $75 per player. The proceeds will benefit the RCSHOF Scholarship Fund and a prize of $600 will be awarded to the winning team. For more information on the T.
