Cherryville to host 2024 and 2025 N.C. Legion state tournaments

By Richard Walker

American Legion baseball has long been popular in the area.

And in 2024 and 2025, the state’s top 8 teams will meet in Cherryville to determine a state champion after Post 100 was awarded the event by the N.C. American Legion baseball committee.

It’ll mark the record 4th and 5th times Cherryville has hosted the event that sends its winner to an American Legion regional national tournament.

As tournament host, Cherryville will have an automatic berth along with teams from Areas I, II and III.

For the 2024 event, Cherryville will host a week’s worth of events before and during the tournament that begin in North Carolina in 2000.

On Thursday, July 18, a kickoff celebration in downtown Cherryville will be held from 7-10 p.m. with the Band of Oz providing entertainment.

On Friday, July 19, a parade will be held at 4:30 p.m. in Cherryville with N.C. Legion Hall of Fame inductees serving as grand marshalls before a 6 p.m. banquet at Cherryville Baptist Church and, finally, a home run derby at Cherryville’s Fraley Field.

Then from Saturday, July 20 to Wednesday, July 24 a double-elimination tournament will be played to determine the state champion.

Cherryville hosting the event in 2024 and 2025 will extend Post 100’s record for numbers of times serving as host; Cherryville previously has hosted the 2005, 2019 and 2021 state tournaments.

Other venues to host the state tournament have been Granite Falls (2000, 2012), Garner (2001, 2007), Salisbury (2002, 2015), Fayetteville (2003), Shelby (2004), High Point (2006, 2018), Gastonia (2008), Greenville (2009, 2017), Asheboro (2010), Morehead City (2011), Wilson (2013), Lexington (2014), Wingate (2016) and Buies Creek (2022, 2023).
