9-9-23 roundup: Pro football, baseball, basketball and soccer, High school football, College football, Middle school football and softball, NASCAR

By Richard Walker

Every week this season, www.CarolinasSportsHub.com will look back at the Carolina Panthers’ historic 2003 season that ended with the franchise’s first trip to the Super Bowl.

Ricky Proehl catches the game-winning touchdown pass for the Carolina Panthers in their 2003 season opener.

Week 1: Offseason free agent signee Jake Delhomme replaced 2002 starter Rodney Peete at quarterback in the second half with the Panthers trailing the Jacksonville Jaguars 17-0 – and after being booed off the field at the end of the first half by their own fans. But Delhomme led a rally for a 24-23 that is capped by a 12-yard TD pass to Ricky Proehl with 12 seconds left.
