9-8-23 roundup: Pro football, baseball, basketball and soccer, High school football, tennis and cross country, College football, Middle school football and softball, NASCAR

By Richard Walker

In Shelby’s long history as the state’s winningest football program, the Golden Lions have gone 0-4 to start a football season only once.

Entering Friday’s home game against Class 4A Charlotte Olympic, the Golden Lions were 0-3 and desperate to avoid the second 0-4 start in school history.

And Shelby did so emphatically in a 51-21 home victory.

Tristan Tate led the Golden Lions with 164 yards rushing and 3 TDs.

Shelby had only once started 0-4, that coming in the winless (0-9) season of 1935. The Golden Lions have started 0-3 in 4 other seasons – 1996, 2001, 2012 and last year.

Each time Shelby had won its 4th games and each time the Golden Lions have advanced to the state playoffs.

Will the Carolina Panthers have the services of top pass rusher Brian Burns in Sunday’s season opener in Atlanta?

It’s still uncertain even though the two-time Pro Bowl outside linebacker participated in his third straight practice on Friday.

Burns is in the final year of his rookie contract and is due $16 million this season. But Burns is seeking a large, multi-year contract extension.

Burns declined comment through the team’s public relations staff on his status for Sunday. His agent, Todd France, has not returned text messages to the Associated Press.

Panthers coach Frank Reich said Friday he has “no further updates” on Burns’ contract situation.

“Brian has handled it like it a pro,” Reich added. “He has practiced. There were one or two days where he didn’t. Other than that it has been the same course of business. He has been the professional that he is. I’m just going to leave it at that.”

The Charlotte Hornets on Thursday announced the schedule for their 8 “Anniversary Night” games during the upcoming 2023-24 season as the franchise marks the 35th Anniversary of the inaugural 1988-89 Hornets season.

Highlights will include honoring all-time greats Baron Davis and Gerald Wallace on Saturday, November 18, and Saturday, February 10, respectively.

The first Anniversary Night will be the Oct. 25 Opening Night and 15,000 fans will receive an Opening Night T-shirt when the Hornets host the Atlanta Hawks. Davis will be honored during a game against the New York Knicks on Nov. 18 and Wallace will be recognized when the Memphis Grizzlies visit Charlotte on Feb. 10.

Both players will take part in special halftime ceremonies acknowledging their achievements during their careers in Charlotte. The first 5,000 fans entering Spectrum Center for those two games will receive commemorative posters of Davis and Wallace, respectively.

The Anniversary Night schedule also includes the Milwaukee Bucks game on Feb. 29, where the first 5,000 fans in attendance will receive a set of nesting dolls featuring a trio of Hornets point guards who have worn No. 1 – LaMelo Ball, Baron Davis and Muggsy Bogues.

For each Anniversary Night, the Hornets will wear the new teal Classic Edition uniform that echoes the second-generation Hornets uniforms worn from 1997 to 2002. The games will feature appearances by former Hornets greats, along with themed arena activations, music and game presentation elements designed to take fans through the evolution of the franchise from 1988 to the present – and on into the future.
