9-5-23 roundup: Pro football, baseball, basketball and soccer, High school football and volleyball, College football, Middle school football, softball and golf, NASCAR

By Richard Walker

When Maryland and the Charlotte 49ers agreed to a two-game series in March 2016, the 49ers were four head coaches away from a homecoming trip for current Charlotte head coach Biff Poggi and many of his players.

Charlotte 49ers quarterback Jalon Jones scrambles for yardage during last Saturday’s 24-3 season-opening win over South Carolina State.

Back then, the 49ers had just completed their second season under inaugural head coach Brad Lambert. Will Healy and interim head coach Pete Rossomando would follow before Poggi would be hired during the final week of the 2022 season.

Hired in mid-November, Poggi has been on the job for nearly 10 months and has brought many players from his past to play for the 49ers.

Since Poggi is a from Baltimore, Md., and previously coached at that city’s Saint Frances Academy for 24 of 25 years from 1996 to 2020, it’s created quite the homecoming in this weekend’s historic contest.

Not only is it the first time the 49ers have played on national television on one of the three major networks (ABC, CBS and NBC) when Saturday’s 7:30 p.m. game is the Big Ten Conference’s NBC Game of the Week, but 31 players on the current Charlotte roster will consider the game a homecoming.

“It’s a great opponent against a consistent Big 10 winner,” associate head coach Kyle DeVan said at Tuesday’s weekly Charlotte 49ers news conference. “This is also a game that’ll be played at a place that’s very familiar to many of our players and staff.”

Poggi has 28 former Saint Frances High players on his roster and three others with Maryland ties, among them six transfers from Maryland.

Fourteen of those 31 are currently on the two-deep depth chart, including starting quarterback Jalon Jones, starting offensive tackle Ja’Khi Green, starting linebacker Nikhai Hill-Green and starting safety Isaiah Hazel.

The contest marks the 49ers’ 11th game against a Power 5 Conference school. Charlotte is 1-9 in its first 10 such matchups, winning only a 2021 season-opener at home against Duke.

And last year, Maryland won 56-21 at Charlotte on Sept. 10.

“This is the kind of game is why you come to Charlotte,” 49ers linebacker Demetrius Knight said.
