When Mack Brown was the featured speaker in May for the 2023 Gaston County Sports Hall of Fame ceremony at the Gastonia Conference Center, he called former Ashbrook High standout British Brooks one of the “hardest-working players” he’s ever coached and said Brooks was in “our Hall of Fame” due to overcoming injury to play again this season.
On Saturday night as Brown became the first head coach to win 100 games at two Bowl Championship Series schools and Brooks returned to football after more than a year away due to a knee injury, emotion overcame Brooks at the end of North Carolina’s 31-17 win over South Carolina at Charlotte’s Bank of America Stadium.
“It was crazy,” said Brooks, a 2018 Ashbrook High graduate who embraced Brown at game’s end on the Tar Heels’ sidelines. “I was just trying to soak it all in. Emotions are high just to make it back to this point.”
Brooks didn’t just “make it back.”
A two-time North Carolina special teams captain and special teams MVP, Brooks started Saturday’s game at running back and led the Tar Heels’ rushing attack with 103 yards.
North Carolina’s running game helped create more passing opportunities for Heisman Trophy-candidate quarterback Drake Maye and provided an offensive balance that kept South Carolina on its heels throughout Saturday’s contest.
“Having a quarterback like Drake, we can’t just be a one-dimensional offense,” Brooks said. “If we game plan to be able to run the ball as well as throw it, that will open up lots of opportunities for a lot of players.”
Ironically, Brooks’ last official game before Saturday also came against South Carolina in the same stadium 21 months earlier. That’s when Brooks rushed for a team-high 72 yards that was highlighted by a 63-yard TD run in a 38-21 Gamecocks’ 2021 Belk Bowl victory.
Expected to return as the Tar Heels’ top running back last season, Brooks was knocked out of action by a torn anterior cruciate knee ligament in preseason practice.
Since the NCAA ruled during the COVID-19 pandemic that players would get an extra year of eligibility, Brooks was eager to take advantage of a another year on the gridiron.
“Carolina is a special place and I love it to death,” said Brooks, whose Tar Heels’ career began as a preferred walkon in the fall of 2018. “I couldn’t stay away. Given the opportunity, I knew I couldn’t stay away.”
Saturday’s win comes at the start of a daunting 2023 schedule for North Carolina; The Tar Heels host Appalachian State and Minnesota the next two weeks before beginning an 8-game ACC schedule at Pittsburgh on Sept. 23.
“Beating a great team like South Carolina definitely helps our confidence,” Brooks said. “It’s special just to get a win and start the season off on the right foot.”

No news is no news for Carolina Panthers outside linebacker Brian Burns after he didn’t participate in Monday’s walk-through practice session due to what head coach Frank Reich said was a “personal matter.”
The Panthers and Burns have been discussing a contract extension but nothing has been finalized less than a week before Sunday’s 2023 season opener at Atlanta.
“I appreciate you asking that question because my view of Brian Burns doesn’t diminish at all,” Reich told reporters on Monday. “I mean, we understand there’s a business side to this thing we do, and I still respect and admire the way he’s handled himself.
“So I have nothing but the highest regard for Brian Burns.”
Burns chose not to talk to reporters in the locker room on Monday, stepping into the athletic training room as reporters approached.
