9-4-22 roundup: Pro baseball, football and soccer, High school football, College football, Middle school football and softball, Auto racing

By Richard Walker

There was so much to unpack from Friday’s Crest-Shelby thriller that it’s hard to know where to start in this week’s “Monday Morning Quarterback” high school edition for this week.

Crest head coach Jim Sosebee talks to his team after last Friday’s 54-49 home win over Shelby.

Crest’s dramatic 54-49 victory in the 54th matchup of a series marked by defense fell just two points shy of a Cleveland County high school all-time record for combined points in a game.

It also saw Crest’s pass-catch duo of Ny’Tavious Huskey and Javarius Green set records.

Huskey’s seven TD throws ties the school record set by Willie Green II (Javarius’ older brother) in the 2015 season. Javarius Green’s 10 catches for 309 yards and five touchdowns set Crest records for yards receiving and TD catches.

The game-winning 93-point pass from Huskey to Javarius Green is the second-longest scoring throw in school history; Cameron Peeler had a 94-yad touchdown pass to Tyshun Odom in 2016 (also against Shelby).

The nature of the victory was indeed rare in Crest history as it marks only the fourth time the Chargers have posted a victory in which they yielded 40 or more points.

For Shelby, the 54 points allowed would be a “modern” record for most allowed in school history. Shelby yielded 100 in 1920, 69 in 1929, 59 in 1915 and 1923 and 53 in 1935. The last time an opponent came so close to 50 was Southwest Onslow in its 49-21 N.C. 2A championship victory over Shelby in 2004.
