The Cherryville American Legion Post 100 baseball family has had a rough couple of weeks following the death of longtime scoreboard operator Darise Hartman.

Hartman died on Sept. 15 at 89 with one of the greatest attendance streaks in Legion baseball history; Hartman attended the American Legion World Series for 34 straight years beginning in 1987 and lasting until 2021.
It took him to faraway places such at Spokane, Wash., Yakima, Wash., and Corvallis, Ore., but also to Shelby once Veterans Field at Keeter Stadium in 2008 and again when it became the permanent home of the ALWS in 2011.
Hartman first fell in love with Legion baseball in 1953 as a 20-year-old when Cherryville won its first Area IV title, first N.C. state title and first ALWS appearance in 1953.
Hartman didn’t travel to Miami, Fla., for that year’s ALWS but he did get to see Post 100 in the 1998 ALWS in Las Vegas, Nev., and the 2003 ALWS at Bartlesville, Okla.; Post 100 finished as ALWS runner-up in each of those years.
At every ALWS tournament he attended, in addition to watching the games, Hartman made sure to get one or more baseballs from the venue, frequently bringing back souvenirs for his friends.
“I can’t imagine how many baseballs he collected,” Danny Eaker, a close friend of Hartman’s and the longtime public address announcer at Cherryville Fraley Field, told The Cherryville Eagle newspaper. “He would run down foul balls to make sure he got his souvenirs.”
It meant Hartman’s August vacation was set every year, frequently talking Eaker and fellow scoreboard operator Troy Thomas into travelling to games with him.
In April of this year, Hartman fell from the roof of a house and never recovered from the accident.
At Hartman’s funeral service, a photo collage featuring images of baseball and a baseball diamond were featured. And he was buried in a red ALWS jacket he purchased in 1987. A Cherryville Post 100 cap and a baseball also were placed in his coffin.
Hartman’s final resting place?
The Cherryville City Memorial Cemetery, which is located across the road from the Fraley Field ballpark where he spent so much time.
