With a win and an impressive losing performance, Saturday’s opening games have to be considered a success for the Charlotte 49ers and Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs.
Despite falling behind 3-0 in front of a sellout crowd of 15,622 at Jerry Richardson Stadium in the much-anticipated head coaching debut of Biff Poggi, the 49ers rolled to a 24-3 victory over South Carolina State.
Meanwhile in Boone, Gardner-Webb threw a scare into the Appalachian State Mountaineers before falling 45-24.
Poggi praised his team following the victory that was his 1st as a college head coach.
“The grittiness and the toughness of the defense and the running game is who we are,” Poggi said. “We are a blue-collar, gritty football team. We’re not these guys that are going to win a game 55-54, we’ve talked about that in here before. We win a game by three touchdowns, that’s a very physically dominant kind of win for a team like us.”
Charlotte scored on 3 straight drives in the 2nd quarter and racked up 193 yards before manager 18 yards in the 1st quarter.
Freshman running back Durell Robinson had 8 carries for 71 yards and a touchdown in the second quarter alone with quarterback Jalon Jones rushing for 45 yards and a score while also completing 10 of 13 passes for 75 yards in the 1st half.
Charlotte rushed for 220 total yards and the 49ers defense limited the Bulldogs to 168 yards of total offense while recording four three-and-outs, two turnovers on downs, seven tackles for losses, three sacks, and an interception.
The three points allowed are the fewest by Charlotte since allowing six points to Old Dominion in 2017.
Jones finished 13 of 19 overall for 125 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions with 49 yards rushing.
Charlotte next plays at Maryland next Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in a nationally-televised game on NBC.
Gardner-Webb led 24-21 in the third quarter before Appalachian State scored the final 24 points of the game.
Runnin’ Bulldogs’ defensive end Ty French made history on Appalachian State’s second drive of the game with a sack that gave his 25 for his career to tie former Liberty standout Chima Uzowihe (2012-15) for the most career sacks in Big South Conference history.
Gardner-Webb would then go on to take 10-7, 17-14 and 24-21 leads before Appalachian State’s late burst put the game away.
Jayden Brown had a career-high 67 yards receiving on three catches and quarterback Matthew Caldwell’s 30 completions is tied for the second-most in school history in a single game. (Chip Stuart completed 32 passes in two games vs Presbyterian and Wofford in 1980 and by John Craven against Catawba in 1992.)
Also, French is 4 sacks away from tying former Super Bowl-winner Gabe Wilkins for the Gardner-Webb’s career sack record of 29.
The Runnin’ Bulldogs return to action on Saturday at 6 p.m. against Elon at home at Spangler Stadium.
