9-28-23 roundup: Pro football, baseball, basketball and soccer, High school football, volleyball and tennis, College football, Middle school football, softball and golf, NASCAR

By Richard Walker

In area high school football history, East Gaston and West Lincoln have struggled more than most.

Entering the 2023 season, the programs ranked Nos. 13 and No. 12 in Cleveland, Gaston and Lincoln counties, respectively, in all time wins.

But as has been the case in recent seasons, nothing lasts forever as both schools are currently 5-0 and are fast starts to their seasons that could be the best in each school’s history.

East Gaston has a chance to set its school-best start at home on Friday when the Warriors host Thomas Jefferson in a Southern Piedmont 1A/2A Conference game. No previous Warriors’ team has ever started 6-0 as 3-0 in 1977, 4-0 in 2003 and 5-0 in 1978 and this season are the best previous starts as the school is playing its 52nd season.

Coach T.J. Postell is now 21-15 in his 4th year as Warriors head coach. That ranks him ranks 4th in the school’s history in victories; Jerry Adams (45-56-1 from 1975-84), Sean Joyce (26-62 from 2011-18) and Mark Latham (22-16 from 2002 to 2004) are currently the 3 top winners.

After facing Thomas Jefferson (1-5), the schedule will stiffen the rest of the regular season as East Gaston will host Bessemer City (4-2), Burns (3-2) and Shelby (3-3) before closing at winless Highland Tech.

West Lincoln’s 5-0 start became its 2nd-best in its history that is now in its 62nd esason.

The Rebels have now started 4-0 in 11 seasons – in 1967, 1968, 1971, 2001, 2004, 2013, 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022 and this season.

The 1971 season grew to a record 7-0 start before losses in 2 of the last 3 games knocked West Lincoln out of the playoffs.

This year, coach Darren Ponder’s team visits fellow Catawba Valley 2A Conference unbeaten Bunker Hill (5-0) before closing the regular season with the league’s 4 teams who currently have losing records – at Newton-Conover (2-3), at home against West Caldwell (0-5), at East Burke (2-3) and at home against Lincolnton (1-4).

Ponder is now 37-13 record in his 5th year as Rebels head coach. That ranks him 3rd in the school’s history in victories; Brennan Elliott (58-30-2 from 1965-73) and Tom Sain (50-56 from 2010-18) are currently the top 2 winners.
