When Charlotte 49ers coach Biff Poggi attended the school’s first American Athletic Conference Media Day in July, he gained national attention for his terse response to receiving a small amount from questions from reporters in Frisco, Tex.
“That’s it? Three questions?” Poggi said from the podium. “Maybe that’s because you have us ranked last, and that’s all what you think of us.”
Poggi has been trying to turn around a program that had one winning – that at 7-6 in 2019 – and one bowl appearance (also 2019) in its first 8 seasons.
With the 49ers preparing to play at preseason AAC favorite SMU on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., in its first-ever AAC game, Poggi’s team still has the proverbial “chip on its shoulder” mentality.
“Like coach Biff said it at Conference Media that wer not expected to win,” defensive end Demon Clowney said at Tuesday’s weekly 49ers news conference. “We all know we have something to prove as a team.”
With a 1-3 record in non-conference games, Charlotte has had some highs and lows. But, as Poggi reminded the media on Tuesday, the 49ers can still control the narrative of the season.
“If you’re 0-4 and win your league, nobody remembers what you did in September,” Poggi said.
Charlotte will face a tall task against a 2-2 SMU team whose losses came against perennial Big 12 powers Oklahoma and TCU.
“We know we have a challenge,” Poggi said. “We know SMu is good, so good that the ACC picked them to join their conference (at the end of the 2023-24 school year). So it’s like we’re playing a Power 5 conference team.”
So far under Poggi, Charlotte had had strong moments in two losses to Power 5 opponents this season.
Charlotte led Maryland of the Big Ten by a 14-0 margin early in the game and 14-9 at halftime before losing 38-20. And last week, Charlotte outgained Florida of the SEc 180-170 in the last three quarters after falling behind 10-0 in an eventual 22-7 loss.
“We didn’t start fast (at Florida),” Poggi said. “It was 10-0 before you knew it.
“At Maryland, we started fast and didn’t finish fast. So if we combine those two games, we’d be fine.”
Through 4 games, quarterback Jalon Jones (261 yards rushing, 363 yards passing) has led the offense and 2019 Huss graduate Prince Bemah leads the team in tackles with 28 and is 6 shy of moving into the top 20 in career tackles in school history.
