The Carolina Panthers set dubious history in Sunday’s 37-27 loss at the Seattle Seahawks as the loss dropped them to 0-3 for only the 5th time in the team’s 29-year history.
It’s the first time since 2010 when Carolina finished 2-14 in John Fox’s final season of a 9-year tenure. The other times came in the inaugural 1995 season (7-9 final record), 1998 (4-12) and 2009 (8-8).
Sunday’s loss also saw Andy Dalton become the 24th starting quarterback in franchise history with rookie No. 1 overall selection Bryce Young out of action with an ankle injury suffered in the Sept. 18 home loss to New Orleans.
Dalton, a 13-year NFL veteran, is the 24th all time NFL passing leader (he now has 38,511 yards) and 41st-winningest (83-78-2 record as a starter after Sunday’s loss).
Dalton directed five scoring drives in Sunday’s loss while throwing a career-high 58 passes. He completed 34 of them for 361 yards with 2 touchdowns on a day the Panthers rushed only 14 times for 44 yards. Adam Thielen was Dalton’s top target with 11 catches for 145 yards and 1 touchdown.
Kicker Eddy Pineiro had field goals that gave Carolina leads of 3-0 and 13-12 and Dalton’s 1st TD pass (to D.J. Chark) helped the Panthers to a 10-9 advantage.
But the second half was dominated by the Seahawks as they finished with 425 total offensive yards, including 146 rushing.
It also saw Pineiro’s consecutive field goal streak come to an end at 25 after he missed a 55-yard field goal in the 3rd quarter.
And Seattle’s “12th Man” home field advantage paid big dividends as the noise from the crowd of 68,699 led to 8 Panthers’ false start penalties, including 4 on 2nd-year offensive tackle Ikem Ekwonu.
