The first big Southern Piedmont 1A/2A matchup of the season turned into a rout for Shelby as the Golden Lions rolled to a 55-7 win at previously unbeaten Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy on Friday night.
Shelby improved to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in league play by scoring the game’s last 49 points after the Gryphons (3-1, 1-1) led 7-6 after the first quarter. Daylin Lee had three touchdown passes – two to Luke Williams – and Bricen Kee had 116 yards rushing and one touchdown to lead Shelby.
Earlier on Friday, Shelby’s Santana Hopper committed to play at Appalachian State. A 6-foot-1, 280-pound defensive lineman, Hopper is considered a three-star recruit by 247sports.com and had also received offers from East Carolina, Arizona State, Auburn and Campbell.

Maiden 20, West Lincoln 14: A touchdown with 8.2 seconds left handed visiting West Lincoln (4-1) its first loss of the season.
Community School of Davidson 23, Mountain Island Charter 14: The Raptors fell to 3-1 with their first loss of the season.
Kings Mountain 56, North Gaston 0: The Mountaineers won its fourth straight game with a comfortable Big South 3A home victory.
Statesville 16, East Lincoln 6: The visiting Greyhounds dropped East Lincoln to 0-2 in the Western Foothills 3A Conference.
South Point 42, Huss 7: Tyson Riley rushed for 199 yards and three touchdowns as South Point scored the game’s final 42 points after trailing 7-0 after the first quarter.

College football
Charlotte quarterback Chris Reynolds passes for 339 yards and four touchdowns and rushed for one touchdown as the 49ers won their Conference USA for the second time in school history with a 42-39 Friday night home win over Middle Tennessee.
Former Shelby High standout Calvin Camp rushed for 101 yards and one touchdown and wide receiver Grant Dubose caught nine passes for 114 yards and two touchdowns for Charlotte (3-1, 1-0), which had only won one of its six previous CUSA league openers (2018).
Middle Tennessee (1-3, 0-2) was led by Chase Cunningham’s 379 yards passing and five touchdowns in his first career start.
There were four lead changes through the second and third quarters before Charlotte took a 35-24 lead with 10:27 left.
Charlotte’s next game is at Illinois of the Big Ten Conference on Oct. 2.

The Carolina Panthers learned some news on the severity of the injuries three of the team’s players suffered in Thursday night’s 24-9 win at Houston.
Cornerback Jaycee Horn has suffered three broken bones in his foot and could be out for the rest of the season. Running back Christian McCaffrey will be out a “few weeks” after injuring his hamstring. And safety Juston Burris has an injured groin and his status is unknown for the team’s next game on Oct. 3 at Dallas.
