9-22-22 roundup: Pro baseball, football and soccer, High school football, volleyball and boys soccer, College football, Middle school football and softball, Auto racing

By Richard Walker

Lincolnton High faces its third-oldest existing rivalry when the Wolves host Newton-Conover on Friday.

Lincolnton first met “Newton” in 1929 – or 12 years before “Newton-Conover” was formed.

And the Wolves hold a 32-26-3 all-time lead in the series that includes a 20-0 win in that inaugural matchup at Love Field in Lincolnton that is now parking lot on Gaston College’s Lincoln County campus.

Leter this season, Lincolnton will face two older existing rivalries – both started in 1925 – when it meets Maiden and West Caldwell; West Caldwell was formed in 1977 when Lenoir (which faced Lincolnton in 1925) was combined with Gamewell-Collettsville.

Here’s a look at Friday’s other matchup in Cleveland, Gaston and Lincoln counties:

Bessemer City at Highland Tech: Bessemer Ciety leads the series 21-1 that includes a 32-8 win last season.

Cherryville at East Gaston: East Gaston leads the series 9-4 that includes a 50-14 win last season.

Community School of Davidson at Mountain Island Charter: Mountain Island Charter leads the series 5-3, but has lost two straight including 23-14 last season.

Crest at Cramer: Crest leads the series 6-0 that includes a 35-16 win last season.

East Lincoln at Statesville: Statesville leads the series 6-0 that includes regular season (23-6) and second round playoff (42-3) wins last year.

Forestview at Ashbrook: Ashbrook leads the series 14-7, but Forestview won 24-0 last season.

Huss at South Point: South Point leads the series 22-6-1 that includes a 42-7 win last season.

Kings Mountain at North Gaston: Kings Mountain leads the series 35-3-2 that includes a 56-0 win last season that extended the Mountaineers’ winning streak to 20.

North Lincoln at Hickory: Hickory leads the series 2-1 after North Lincoln won 21-6 last season.

Thomas Jefferson at Shelby: Shelby won 55-7 in the first meeting between the schools last season.

West Lincoln at Maiden: Maiden leads the series 41-8 that includes regular season (20-14) and second rounder playoff (47-0) wins last year.
