The 9th-oldest rivalry in Gaston County resumes tonight when East Gaston opens its Southern Piedmont 1A/2A Conference schedule at Cherryville.

It’s a rivalry that features four schools and once was highlighted by one of the most amazing individual performances in N.C. high school football history.
East Gaston, which opened in 1972 as the combination of old Mount Holly and Stanley high schools, holds an overall lead of 25-12-3 in a series that began in 1927 as Mount Holly against Cherryville.
But it was a Stanley-Cherryville matchup that featured one of the greatest performances and greatest individual performers in state history.
Charlie Handsel, the only Shrine Bowler in Stanley High history, scored 47 points and rushed for 301 yards in the Blue Devils’ 59-0 victory on Nov. 4, 1955 in a game played on what is now Cherryville’s Fraley Field.
Not only was the highest-scoring game in Stanley’s 24-year history of football (1948 to 1971), but Handsel scoring title was a state record that lasted for nearly five years and remains a Gaston County single-game record.
Handsel’s 301 yards rushing stood as a county record until 1994; Cherryville’s Stephan Corry rushed for 303 yards against West Lincoln.
Additionally, Handsel’s 1,326 yards rushing in 1955 and 2,006 yards rushing from 1954 to 1955 stood as county records until South Point’s Scott Crawford broke both records in the Red Raiders’ state championship season of 1971.
Handsel, then a 6-foot-2, 210-pounder, originally played offensive line for Gaston County Hall of Fame coach Dick Thompson.
But injuries on his team and Handsel’s 9.7-second speed in the 100-yard dash led Thompson to move Handsel to halfback a few games into the 1954 season.
Stanley teammate John Keeter, who later was a championship-winning coach at Chase High School, recalls Thompson telling Handsel during halftime of the 1954 game against old Charlotte’s O’Donoghue High (now Charlotte Catholic) in a game at Charlotte’s old Griffith Park that hosted minor league baseball and high school football from 1941 to 1985 when it burned down.
“The biggest thing I remember is that we were playing old O’Donoghue High at Charlotte’s Griffith Park,” Keeter told The Gaston Gazette in 2018 when Handsel had died at 81. “Coach Thompson knew Charlie could run fast and at halftime, he said, ‘Charlie, you’re going to running back.’
“The first time he touched the ball in the second half, he went 80 yards for a touchdown – and he never played on the line again.”
Because his numbers were so staggering for the times, Handsel drew recruiting attention from schools all over the nation and even flew Syracuse, Notre Dame and UCLA for recruiting trips in addition to receiving interest from virtually all major colleges in the Carolinas (most notably Clemson).
But after graduating from high school, Handsel chose to stay in his hometown.
“He just wasn’t that interested in leaving town and going to school to play football,” Keeter said. “He became an electrician in Stanley, got married and had a family and enjoyed his life.”
Handsel’s exploits in 1954 and 1954 Stanley victories over Cherryville helped the Blue Devils finish with an alltime 4-2 series win over the Ironmen.
Mount Holly finished with a 11-6-3 lead in its series over Cherryville. And East Gaston has a 10-4 lead in its series against Cherryville that began in 1973 and includes a 38-0 Warriors’ win in 2022.

Could the Carolina Panthers have a new starting quarterback Sunday at Seattle?
That possibility is greater after rookie Bryce Young, who started the team’s first two games, missed his second straight day of practice on Thursday. Young is dealing with an ankle injury he suffered in Monday’s 20-17 home loss to New Orleans.
Veteran quarterback Andy Dalton took first team reps on Thursday and practice squad Jake Luton also got some reps while Young was in attendance but didn’t participate in any drills.
