By Richard Walker

After blitzing Atlantic League of Professional Baseball opponents all season long, the Gastonia Honey Hunters will need to win twice this weekend to advance to the league championship series.

The High Point Rockers evened the best-of-five Southern Division playoff series at one game apiece following Wednesday’s 11-4 victory at CaroMont Health Park in Gastonia.

High Point will host the next three games of the series on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Gastonia went 88-44 in the regular season and won the first- and second-half divisional titles.

Should the Honey Hunters win the series, they’ll host the first two games of the best-of-five ALPB championship series next Tuesday and Wednesday before playing at the North Division champion on Sept. 30, Oct. 1 and Oct. 2.

The Charlotte Hornets have agreed to a one-year contract with Dennis Smith, Jr., less than a week before 2022 training camp gets underway.

Smith, a Fayetteville Christian High standout who played one year at N.C. State, was the No. 9 overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft by the Dallas Mavericks. He averaged 15.2 points and 5.2 assists as a rookie in the 2017-18 season but was later traded to the New York Knicks and Detroit Pistons before signing a one-year deal with the Portland Trail Blazers last season.

Smith averaged 5.6 points, 3.6 assists and 17.2 minutes in 36 games before before a right elbow injury ended his season.
