9-19-21 roundup: Pro football, golf and baseball, College football, High school football and boys soccer, Middle school football and softball
By Richard Walker
A dominating defensive effort in Sunday’s 26-7 home win over the New Orleans Saints could have the Carolina Panthers thinking big already this season.
Not only did it give the Panthers a 2-0 for only the eighth time in the franchise’s 27-year history but it also ended a four-game losing streak to New Orleans.
A Panthers defense that limited the Saints to 128 yards total offense also sacked quarterback Jameis Winston four times and intercepted him twice. Carolina’s defense now has 10 sacks in the first two games.
Carolina built a 17-0 first half lead and cruised to the victory.
Christian McCaffrey had 72 yards rushing and one touchdown and caught five passes for 65 yards. Sam Darnold completed 26 of 38 passes for 305 yards and two touchdowns. And D.J. Moore had a game-high eight catches for 79 yards.
Darnold’s third quarter pass interception led to New Orleans’ only score on a Winston 8-yard TD run.
The Panthers have a quick turnaround as they play at Houston on Thursday at 8:20 p.m. in hopes of the franchise’s fifth 3-0 start.
Of the previous seven 2-0 starts, Carolina made the playoffs six times.
