9-18-23 roundup: Pro football, baseball, basketball and soccer, High school football, volleyball and girls tennis, College football, Middle school football and softball, NASCAR
By Richard Walker
The Carolina Panthers’ offense struggled again and it cost the team a 20-17 home loss to the New Orleans Saints on Monday Night Football at Charlotte’s Bank of America Stadium.
The loss also dropped Carolina to 0-2 to start the season for the 12th time in the team’s 29-year history.
Only in 2013 have the Panthers bounced back from an 0-2 starts to have a winning record and a playoff berth as that Carolina team finished 12-4 with the NFC South Division title.
Additionally, the Panthers are 0-2 in a division race with all three other teams (Atlanta, New Orleans and Tampa Bay) at 2-0.
In a defensive-minded game, Carolina lost linebacker Shaq Thompson to what appeared to be a significant right left injury in the first quarter as he was carted off the field and did not return.
And rookie No. 1 overall pick Bryce Young struggled against a Saints defense that didn’t allow its first touchdown of the season until 1:16 remained and New Orleans was ahead 20-9.
Young completed 22 of 33 throws for 153 yards and was sacked four times. He also picked up 34 yards on two quarterback scrambles.
