After one week, the four unbeaten teams in the Big South 3A Conference are conference favorites Crest, Kings Mountain and South Point in addition to upstart North Gaston.
How surprising is North Gaston?
The Wildcats won their second Big South Conference game in their 47 league contests when they knocked off Forestview 26-20.
The win ended a 15-game losing streak to the Jaguars in the series and also gave North Gaston its first 3-game winning streak since it started the 2013 season with a 5-0 record.
Second-year coach Daniel Rothwell endured 11 straight losses to begin his tenure as North Gaston coach. But after Rothwell and the Wildcats lost 29-14 at unbeaten East Gaston, they’ve beaten Bessemer City 10-6, Cherryville 55-7 and Forestview heading into next week’s matchup against unbeaten Kings Mountain.
North Gaston has struggled mightily since it recorded the only six postseason wins in school history in 2006 and 2007 with quarterback A.J. Blue at the helm that included a trip to the 2007 N.C. 3A state championship game.
Since that contest, the Wildcats have gone 27-144 overall and 8-90 in Big South games – and that includes this season’s 3-1, 1-0 start.
