Burns and Shelby opened their bids for a Southern Piedmont 1A/2A Conference title on Friday night with high-scoring road victories.

Burns set a school record for single game scoring in a 74-0 win over Highland Tech in a game played at Gastonia’s Huss High School and Shelby won 70-0 at Cherryville as Daylin Lee threw six touchdown passes.

Old Kings Mountain Compact High holds the county record with 87 points in a 1964 victory over Cherryville’s Chavis High and Shelby holds the record for existing high schools with an 80-0 victory over Kings Mountain in 1923.

Here’s the other results in Cleveland, Gaston and Lincoln counties:

Crest 33, Ashbrook 17: The host Chargers scored the game’s last 19 points after falling behind 17-14. Javarius Green had a touchdown reception and a touchdown punt return to lead Crest.

West Lincoln 35, Bandys 28: West Lincoln improved to 4-0 for the eighth time in school history with a Catawba Valley 2A win.

East Gaston 13, Cherokee 7: The Warriors improved to 2-2 with the road victory.

East Lincoln 28, Hickory 12: The host Mustangs improved to 4-0 with the Western Foothills 3A Conference win.

Kings Mountain 44, Huss 14: Kings Mountain fell behind for the first time this season as Huss returned the opening kickoff. Then the Mountaineers improved to 4-0 by oustscoring Huss 44-7 the rest of the way.

Bunker Hill 7, Lincolnton 6: The Bears stayed unbeaten with the Catawba Valley 2A win.

Pine Lake Prep 30, Mountain Island Charter 0: Mountain Island Charter fell to 2-1 with the defeat.

Forestview 20, North Gaston 0: The Jaguars beat North Gaston for the 15th straight time in the Big South 3A opener.

South Point 47, Cramer 14: Cam Medlock scored three touchdowns to lead the Red Raiders to a 9-0 all-time record against Cramer.

Statesville 15, North Lincoln 9: The Greyhounds ruined North Lincoln’s debut on its new turf field.

Bessemer City 47, Thomas Jefferson 24: Jameer Holmes had four touchdown passes and one touchdown run to give Shane Short his first head coaching victory.

High school athletics

The N.C. High School Athletic Association, in conjunction with Wells Fargo, released the final standings in the 42nd annual Wells Fargo Cup competitions for the 2021-22 school year.

This year Cardinal Gibbons (4A), Croatan (3A) and Pine Lake Prep (2A) were back-to-back winners with Gibbons winning its fourth straight. In Class 1A, Bishop McGuinness earned the title for the eighth time in school history and the first time since the 2014-2015 season.

South Point 3-0 (25-14, 25-8, 25-10 on Thursday): Meile Songaila (15 service points, 20 kills, 5 serve receptions, 14 digs), Myracle Davis (22 kills, 2 blocks), Camden Pasour (7 service points, 2 kills, 22 assists, 9 digs), Paige Bagwell (13 service points, 1 kill, 18 assists, 8 digs) and Caroline Barber (7 service points, 6 assists, 20 serve receptions, 19 digs).
