9-14-21 roundup: College football, High school football, boys soccer and volleyball, Middle school football and softball, Pro football, basketball and baseball

By Richard Walker

Charlotte is off to its fourth 2-0 start in the school’s nine-year football history.

Chris Reynolds (3) celebrates with his teammates after his touchdown run against Gardner-Webb. [charlotte49ers.com]
Coach Will Healy said during his weekly news conference that 2-0 won’t mean anything if the team doesn’t finish strong – and that starts with this week’s 7 p.m. game at Georgia State.

“Every week I say this to the team: ‘The key to our success is getting better and better week after week,'” Healy said. “That hasn’t changed.”

Georgia State enters 0-2 but they’ve played at Army (43-10 loss) and North Carolina (59-17).

“They’ve got talent all over the field,” Healy said of Georgia State.

Plus, while Healy had nothing to do it, Charlotte’s past after 2-0 starts hasn’t gone so well.

In 2013 in the school’s first season in the sport, a 2-0 start turned into a 5-6 season.

In 2014, a 3-0 start also turned into a 5-6 finish.

And in 2015, a 2-0 start in the first season of Conference USA football ended up at 2-10 overall.

“I think our guys care about 2-0 because they know there are challenges ahead,” Healy said.

So far, senior quarterback Chris Reynolds has thrown a game-winning touchdown in the historic 31-28 over Duke in the season-opener and set a school record for most passing yardage during last Saturday’s 38-10 win over Gardner-Webb.

Charlotte now heads on the road for the first time this season; The 49ers are 12-32 all-time in road games.

Leaders for Charlotte this season have been Reynolds (427 yards passing), Calvin Camp (107 yards rushing) and Victor Tucker (12 catches for 166 yards receiving).

Pro football

The Carolina Panthers have a new kicker – and they have reclaimed their upcoming seventh-round draft pick – after waiving kicker Ryan Santoso on Tuesday and signing Zane Gonzalez off the Detroit Lions’ practice roster.

The Panthers have sent a conditional seventh-round pick to the Giants last month for Santoso. Had Santoso remained on the Panthers roster for Sunday’s second game of the season, Carolina would’ve owed New York the draft pick. Santoso missed an extra point Sunday’s 20-14 win over the New York Jets in the season-opener.

Gonzalez, 26, was in Panthers camp earlier this summer.

He also has kicked for the Cleveland Browns and Arizona Cardinals and has career percentages of 78.0 on fieid goals and 94.6 on extra points.

His best season came in 2019 for the Cardinals when he converted 31 of 35 field goals and 34 of 35 extra points.

Carolina also added cornerback Corn Elder to the practice squad, giving Elder a third try with the team. A fifth-round pick of the Panthers in 2017, Elder was released in August 2019 and re-signed in November 2019.

Elder had signed with the Detroit Lions in April but was released last month.

Here is the Carolina Panthers’ 2021 regular season schedule:
