Charlotte 49ers first-year head coach Biff Poggi said at Tuesday’s weekly news conference that he felt he made a mistake during his team’s 38-20 loss at Maryland.

Poggi said when his team held a 14-3 lead in the second quarter and faced a fourth-and-8 play near midfield, he thought about going for it before choosing to punt.

“Players win games, not coaches,” Poggi said in explaining his second guess. “But coaches can lose games. This mistake I made was when faced a fourth down … and I should’ve called a timeout.
“We had momentum. We had them on their heels. Our coaches came up to me and said, ‘Go for it!’ And I should have.”

The punt led to a Maryland drive for a field goal that closed the Terrapins within 14-6 and continued what became a streak of 38 unanswered points by Maryland.

“I’m really proud of the players,” Poggi said. “They played really hard and really well. We all think it’s a game we should’ve won. That’s why this week’s game is a really big for us.
“It’s the most important game because it’s the next game. Every week there has to be a sense of urgency.”

At 1-1, Charlotte hosts an unbeaten Georgia State (2-0) team coming off wins over Rhode Island (42-35) and Connecticut (35-14).

“We talk a lot about complimentary football – and you’ve got to win all three phases,” Poggi said. “Since the spring that we’ve got an elite defense. And we’re getting really close with the offense.”

Through two games, Charlotte has yielded 698 yards while gaining 659.

Bethune-Cookman transfer quarterback Jalon Jones leads the team in passing (241 yards, 2 touchdowns) and rushing (116 yards, 1 touchdown) and sophomore wide receiver Jairus Mack had 5 catches for 109 yards and 1 touchdown, including 4 catches for 106 yards and that score last week.

Top defenders have been Wayne Wayne Jones (14 tackles), Demetrius Knight (14 tackles, 16-yard TD interception return), Nikhai Hill-Green (13 tackles) and 2019 Huss graduate Prince Bemah (10 tackles, 1 sack), who surpassed 100 tackles in his 49ers’ career.
