The Carolina Panthers struggles in Atlanta and head coach Frank Reich’s struggles in season openers continued on Sunday as rookie Bryce Young’s regular season debut was ruined by 2 pass interceptions that led to 10 Falcons’ points in Sunday’s 24-10 Atlanta victory.

The Panthers fell to 8-21 all time in Atlanta and 11-18 in season openers while Reich dropped to 0-5-1 in season openers.
Young, whom Carolina traded up to select No. 1 overall in April’s NFL draft, completed 20 of 38 passes for 146 yards with one TD and two interceptions and rushed 3 times for 17 yards.
But Young, who became the 4th opening day starting quarterback in 4 years for the Panthers, became the 13th starting quarterback in 23 1st starts for the franchise to lose in his starting debut.
Carolina and Atlanta were tied at 10 entering the 4th quarter before the Falcons scored 2 TDs in the final 15 minutes to close out a victory in a game in which the Panthers held a 281 to 221 total yardage advantage.
Miles Sanders (72 yards) and Chuba Hubbard (60) led a 154-yard rushing attack for Carolina and Hayden Hurst was the top receiver with five catches for 41 yards and the Panthers’ lone touchdown.
Additionally, Carolina outside linebacker Brian Burns played after there was speculation he may sit out as contract extension talks appear to have stalled the final year of his rookie contract; Burns started and made 7 tackles with 1 1/2 sacks and a forced fumble.
The Panthers get seven full days off before returning to action on Monday, Sept. 18 in the home opener at 7:15 p.m. on Monday Night Football against NFC South division rival New Orleans.

Gardner-Webb and Charlote had strong starts in their games on Saturday night with Gardner-Webb finishing off its game against Elon with a victory while Charlotte fell victim to a second half comeback at Maryland.
In Gardner-Webb’s 2023 home opener, an 11-yard TD pass from Matthew Caldwell to Ephraim Floyd with 14 seconds left broke a 27-all tie and sparked the Runnin’ Bulldogs to a 34-27 victory.
A pass interception by Jimmy Bowdry in the final seconds clinched the win.
Gardner-Webb had leads of 3-0, 13-3, 20-10 and 27-13 before Elon forged a tie with 1:25 to play, the tying score coming on an extra point by true freshman kicker Jack Berkowitz (2023 Shelby High graduate).
In the victory, Caldwell passed for 296 yards and 2 TDs and rushed for 25 yards and another TD and Ty French and Narii Gaither continued to climb up the career leaders.
French had a half-sack in the fourth quarter to become the Big South Conference leader in career sacks with 25 1/2. It also moved him 3 1/2 away from former Super Bowl champion Gabe Wilkins’ G-W career sack record of 29.
Gaither rushed for 95 yards to give him 2,612 career rushing yards to surpass the school’s first 1,000-yard single-season rusher Frank Taylor for 5th place in school history.
Gardner-Webb’s next game is next Saturday at Tennessee State at 6 p.m. in the Runnin’ Bulldogs league opener – and their first Big South-OVC contest.
In Charlotte’s 2023 road debut, the 49ers scored the first 14 points of the game before host Maryland scored 38 unanswered points and took a 38-20 victory in Charlotte’s first nationally-televised game on one of the three major networks – ABC, CBS and NBC.
In Saturday night’s NBC Big Ten Game of the Week, 49ers quarterback Jalon Jones threw a 48-yard TD pass to Jairus Mack on the opening drive of the game before Charlotte linebacker Demetrius Knight returned a pass interception 16 yards on Maryland’s first play from scrimmage.
But the 49ers’ 14-0 lead just 3:20 into the contest wouldn’t hold up as Maryland kicked three field goals in the second quarter to close within 14-9 at halftime and a TD and 2-point conversion with 9:18 left in the third quarter gave the Terrapins the lead for good.
Maryland then scored 3 TDs in the first 7 1/2 minutes of the 4th quarter close out it 38-point run and put the game away.
“The first three quarters were lights out,” Biff Poggi said of the 49ers defense in a postgame news conference. “We’re playing a Big 10 East team. They’re a very good football team. We have a two touchdown lead early, and then we make them earn nine points like they’re climbing Mt. Everest. Our defense just had to play too much.”
One of Charlotte’s defenders, 2019 Huss graduate Prince Bemah, had 6 tackles and surpassed 100 tackles for his college career.
The Terrapins outgained Charlotte 530 to 314 in totel offense.
The 49ers return to action on Saturday at 6 p.m. at home at Jerry Richardson Stadium and Charlotte will be honoring its 2022 and 2023 Hall of Fame classes at halftime.
