9-1-22 roundup: Pro baseball, football and soccer, High school football and girls tennis, College football, Middle school softball, Auto racing

By Richard Walker

The second-oldest rivalry in Lincoln County resumes on Friday when East Lincoln visits Lincolnton.

It’s rivalry that began in 1974 when Lincolnton left the old Western N.C. Activities Association to join the N.C. High School Athletic Association and came in the same season when Lincolnton also started playing West Lincoln; East Lincoln-West Lincoln is the oldest Lincoln County rivalry as it started in 1962.

The East Lincoln-Lincolnton rivalry has frequently been a league matchup and twice the teams have played in state playoff games.

While Lincolnton’s Wolves hold a 32-19 all-time lead, the series has been dominated recently by East Lincoln. After losing 21 of the first 23 matchups from 1974 to 1996, East Lincoln has won 17 of the last 28 meetings between the teams. That includes the last five in a row.

Here is a look at Friday’s other matchups in Cleveland, Gaston anc Lincoln counties:

Ashbrook at West Meck: A rivalry that begin 1957 has been dominated by Ashbrook 28-2, though West Meck won the last matchup in 2012. The 2021 meeting was cancelled.
Chazz
Bessemer City at Pine Lake Prep: After losing the first seven meetings between the teams, Pine Lake Prep has won two straight including 20-8 last season.

Burns at Kings Mountain: A series that started in 1968 is tied at 28-all after Kings Mountain 19-14 win last season that extended its winning streak in the rivalry to four games.

Chase at North Gaston: Chase leads series that began in 1973 by a 14-4 margin including a 36-26 win last season.

Cherryville at Blacksburg, S.C.: The only meeting between the two teams was one of only three blemishes on Cherryville’s lone state championship team (7-0-3 record as 1934 Western N.C. Activities Association Western Conference champ). Last year’s scheduled meeting was cancelled.

Cramer at East Gaston: After losing first two matchups, Cramer has won five straight against East Gaston, including 28-21 last season.

Foard at West Lincoln: The 2021 meeting was cancelled of one of West Lincoln’s oldest rivalries; The Rebels lead 27-21-2 in a series that began in 1962.

Freedom at Forestview: Forestview is 2-0 all-time against the Patriots, including 13-7 last season.

Highland Tech at W-S Carver: A rivalry that began when the formerly all-African-American schools competed in the N.C. High School Athletic Conference in 1952 resumes for the 13th time; Carver leads 7-5 all-time, including 26-21 last season.

Huss at Central Cabarrus: Central won the only previous meeting and last season’s game was cancelled.

North Lincoln at Northwest Cabarrus: North Lincoln won a 54-40 shootout in the only previous meeting.

R-S Central at South Point: A rivalry that started in 1952 is led 31-21-2 by South Point. The scheduled 2021 meeting was cancelled.
