After the COVID-19 pandemic completely disrupted high school football in the 2020-21 school year, it continues having an impact on the 2021 fall schedule.

On Wednesday, the Crest at Shelby game that was scheduled for Friday will be postponed with school officials saying they are “working to reschedule.”

It is the fourth game involving schools from Cleveland, Gaston and Lincoln counties that has been altered; Previously, Friday’s schedule Blacksburg, S.C., at Cherryville, Foard at West Lincoln and South Point at R-S Central game have been cancelled.

The cancellations have created another scheduled game as Ashbrook will host West Lincoln on Sept. 10 since both teams have lost games and Sept. 10 had previously been an open date for both schools.

Gardner-Webb released its first game notes and official 2021 roster on Wednesday and 17 local players now are on the roster.

The Bulldogs, who visit Georgia Southern on Saturday at 6 p.m. in their opener, have the following locals on their roster:

Pro football

Former East Lincoln and Lincolnton High standout Sage Surratt was released by the Detroit Lions on Tuesday. But the Lions announced on Wednesday that were signing Surratt to their practice squad after he cleared waivers.

A 2017 Lincolnton High graduate, Surratt was an undrafted free agent who signed with the Lions last spring.

Pro football

After cutting down to a 53-player roster on Tuesday, the Carolina Panthers made several moves on Wednesday that include announcing players on the team’s practice squad.

Carolina added offensive line depth Wednesday by claiming guard Michael Jordan off waivers from the Cincinnati Bengals. A former fourth-round pick from Ohio State in 2019, the 6-foot-6, 315-pound Jordan started 19 games for Cincinnati the last two seasons. A guard and center at Ohio State, Jordan was an All-American in 2018 after playing in all 41 possible games from from 2016-18 for Ohio State.

The Panthers brought back the following players to its practice squad: offensive linemen Sam Tecklenburg and Aaron Monteiro, running backs Rodney Smith and Spencer Brown, wide receivers Keith Kirkwood, Omar Bayless, and C.J. Saunders, tight end Stephen Sullivan, defensive lineman Frank Herron, cornerback Jalen Julius and safety Kenny Robinson.

It also added former Jets fourth-round pick quarterback James Morgan and veteran cornerback Rashaan Melvin to the practice squad.

The did release veteran wide receiver David Moore, who had signed a two-year contract in March.

Additionally, former Panthers players quarterback Will Grier (Dallas Cowboys) and Christian Miller (Pittsburgh Steelers) have signed with other NFL teams.
