The Mount Holly Sports Hall of Fame will have its 16th induction ceremony on Saturday, Aug. 19 at 6 p.m. at the Mount Holly Citizens Center with its 2023 induction class.

East Gaston’s 2001-02 boys basketball team, which won the school’s first conference tournament title.

This year’s class is comprised of 5 individuals and 2 teams and tickets are $25 apiece and can be purchased by going to fametothename.org, David’s Detailing in Mount Holly or from Mount Holly Sports Hall of Fame committee members.

Longtime coach Rodney Abernathy, state champion wrestler Shelton Camp, longtime tennis player and coach John Jessen, multi-sport twin sisters Cameron Sealey (Flachofsky) and Tameron Sealey (Rushing) will be inducted as individuals.

And two championship-winning teams – the 1959-60 girls basketball team at old Mount Holly High School and the 2001-02 boys basketball team at East Gaston – will be honored.

Abernathy has coached for more than 20 years for local Pop Warner Football, Mount Holly Middle School and East Gaston High School in addition to helping with Mount Holly facilities and community projects, most notably the Field of Dreams and Optimist Club.

Camp helped East Gaston win state wrestling titles while racking up a 93-6-1 individual record, highlighted by his 37-0 individual state championship-winning year in 1993 in the 160-pound weight class.

Jessen played football, basketball and tennis at old Mount Holly High School, ran cross country and played basketball and tennis at then-Lees-McRae Junior College and played tennis at UNC Charlotte before embarking on a long career as a tennis pro at Gaston Country Club and a coach/instructor at East Gaston High School, Belmont Abbey and in local recreation leagues. He was a highly-ranked singles and doubles tennis player in N.C. as an adult.

The Sealeys were star cross country, basketball and softball performers at East Gaston, both earning All-Big South Conference and All-Gaston Gazette honors in multiple sports.

Cameron later was a basketball standout at Lenoir-Rhyne who coached at Pittsburgh-Johnstown, USC-Aiken, Georgia State, Wofford, Lenoir-Rhyne and Belmont Abbey.

Tameron later was a softball standout at Montreat College and Lenoir-Rhyne.

The 1959-60 Mount Holly girls basketball team won the school’s first Little 7 Conference regular season and tournament championships in that sport in 12 years. Billy Megginson was in his 3rd and final year as Hawks’ head coach and the team’s co-captains were Abbie Moore and Ann Oglesby.

The 2001-02 East Gaston boys basketball team won that’s school’s first-ever conference championship and became the first 20-win team in school history. Finishing 22-5 overall – a mark that was a school record until last winter’s 25-3 East Gaston team guided by then-assistant coach Eugene Farrar – head coach Ken Howell’s team was led by Big South 3A Conference player of the year Tyler Berg (a 20.3 points per game scorer) and all-conference selection Jason Sumpter (16.4 average). East Gaston defeated Ashbrook 61-50 in that year’s conference tournament final to end a 20-game Green Wave winning streak and coming two games before the Warriors’ season ended with a double-overtime road state playoff loss at T.C. Roberson.

Charlotte FC 2, Houston Dynamo 1: A pair of second half goals gave the Crown a victory in the Leagues Cup late Monday night and a berth in the quarterfinals of that event.

After yielding a goal in the 10th minute, Charlotte FC tied the score on Patrick Agyemang’s goal in the 80th minute and got an own goal in the 81st minute for the game-winner.

Charlotte FC advances to play at Inter Miami on Friday night in a game where kickoff time hasn’t been determined.
