Here’s a look at pro baseball players from Cleveland, Gaston and Lincoln counties:

Emilio Pagan

Former Gardner-Webb and Belmont Abbey baseball standout Emilio Pagan is 3-5 with nine saves and a 4.97 ERA in 40 appearances for the Minnesota Twins.

Jeffrey Springs (South Point 2011 graduate) is 4-3 with a 2.50 ERA in 22 appearances (14 starts) for the Tampa Bay Rays.

Will Wilson (Kings Mountain 2016 graduate) is on the 60-day disabled list after having surgery on his left hand. He hit .233 with eight home runs and 18 RBIs in 29 games for Class AA Richmond before hitting .217 with two RBIs in seven games for Class AAA Sacramento; Both teams are in the San Francisco Giants organization.

Alec Burleson (East Lincoln 2017 graduate) is hitting .333 with 17 home runs and 73 RBIs for Class AAA Memphis in the St. Louis Cardinals’ organization. A 2nd-round pick of the Cardinals out of East Carolina in 2020, Burleson is in his 3rd professional season.

Reilly Hovis (Forestview 2012 graduate) is 5-4 with a 6.25 ERA in 18 starts for the Gastonia Honey Hunters of the independent Atlantic League of Professional Baseball.

Tyler White (former Gastonia Post 23 Legion, Gastonia Grizzlies player) is hitting .232 with 13 home runs and 45 RBIs for Class AAA Nashville of the Milwaukee Brewers’ organization.

Garrett Davila (South Point 2015 graduate) is 5-2 with a 4.62 ERA in 22 appearances (eight starts) for Class AA Birmigham of the Chicago White Sox organization.

Mason Fox (former Gardner-Webb player) is 4-3 with a 6.81 ERA in 25 appearances for Class A San Antonio of the San Diego Padres’ organization.

Christopher Proctor (Burns 2015 graduate) has played for two teams in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball; Proctor hit .296 with 17 RBIs in 37 games for the High Point Rockers before being traded to the Lancaster Barnstormers where is he hitting .214 with one home run and three RBIs in four games.

Chandler Redmond (former Gardner-Webb player) is hitting .234 with 13 home runs and 50 RBIs in 70 games for Class AA Springfield of the St. Louis Cardinals’ organization.

Jeffrey Springs

Blake Brown (North Gaston 2016 graduate) is on the 60-day disabled list of Class AA Reading in the Philadelphia Phillies’ organization.

Dylan Smith (Forestview 2015 graduate, former Belmont Abbey player) is 1-0 with a 5.09 ERA for the New York Boulders in the Frontier League.

Jeremy Walker (former Gardner-Webb player) was playing in the San Francisco Giants’ organization – he was 0-4 with one save and a 6.88 ERA for Class AAA Sacramento – before being traded to the Tampa Bay Rays; Walker is 0-0 with a 40.50 ERA in one appearances for Class AAA Durham.

Kyle Halbohn (former Belmont Abbey player) was 1-1 with three saves and a 7.24 ERA in 17 appearances for Piratas de Campeche of the Mexican League before he was released in June.

Ben Gobbel (former Belmont Abbey player) is hitting .300 with two RBIs in three games for the Los Angeles Angels’ Rookie League team.

And Isaiah Lowe (Combine Academy 2022 graduate) has signed with the San Diego Padres, C.J. Mayhue (Crest 2019 graduate) with the Los Angeles Angels and Connor Godwin (Combine Academy 2021 graduate) with the Los Angeles Dodgers but none have played in any games yet.

 

 

 

 

 

Pro golf

Gastonia’s Harold Varner III missed the cut for the Wyndham Championship at Greensboro’s Sedgefield Country Club after shooting a second straight even-par 70.

A 2008 Forestview High graduate, Varner shot 70 in both rounds.

The Carolina Panthers Fan Fest comes to Charlotte’s Bank of America Stadium on Thursday, Aug. 11. The event, presented by Daimler Truck North America, begins at 5:30 p.m. at Bank of America Stadium. Tickets are $5 and are on sale to the public now on Panthers.com and Ticketmaster.
