8-31-23 roundup: Pro football, baseball, basketball and soccer, High school football and volleyball, College football, Middle school football and softball, NASCAR

By Richard Walker

A pair of city-county rivalries with striking similarities headline Week 3 of the area’s high school football schedule.

Lincolnton’s Darian Roseboro (45) tackles East Lincoln quarterback Chazz Surratt (12) during a 2014 matchup between the longtime rivals.

County school Crest in Cleveland County first played against Shelby in 1968 and didn’t win in the rivalry until 1980.

In Lincoln County, East Lincoln faced the same type of struggles against Lincolnton as the Wolves won 21 of the first 23 matchups in the series before East Lincoln began turning the tables.

This Friday, both rivalries will be resumed with surprisingly winless Shelby (0-2) hosting unbeaten Crest (2-0) and defending state champion East Lincoln (2-0) seeking its 17th straight overall victory at home against winless Lincolnton (0-2).

The Cleveland County rivalry featured a perennial state power overwhelming Crest in the early years due in large part to the fact that the Crest school district didn’t field its first gridiron team when Crest opened in 1927.

Shelby won 11 of the first 12 matchups – the teams tied in 1973 – and was ahead in the series 19-6-1 before Crest has closed the margin to 30-23-1 with some recent success that includes last year’s 54-49 victory in which the Chargers trailed 23-0 in the second quarter.

The Lincoln County rivalry saw Lincolnton dominate the early years but East Lincoln has won six straight including a 27-0 victory in 2022 and has closed the Wolves’ alltime series lead to 32-20.

Here’s a look at Friday’s other area matchups:

Avery County at Bessemer City: The teams have met 3 times previously – all in the playoffs – with Avery holding a 2-1 series lead.

Blacksburg, S.C. at Cherryville: Cherryville leads the alltime series 1-0-1 including last year’s 21-20 road victory.

East Gaston at Cramer: Cramer has won 6 straight, including 27-21 last season, after East Gaston won the first 2 matchups of the rivalry.

Foard at West Lincoln: West Lincoln leads 28-21-2 alltime in a series that began in 1962. The Rebels also have won 3 straight including 54-7 last season.

Forestview at Freedom: Forestview has never lost to the Patriots in 3 previous meetings, including 13-7 last season.

Highland Tech at Union Academy: Union Academy’s 26-25 win in the 2021 spring season gave it a 3-1 alltime series advantage.

Kings Mountain at Burns: Kings Mountain’s current 5-game winning streak in the series that includes a 27-0 win last season, has given the Mountaineers a 27-26 alltime lead in a series that began in 1968.

Providence at Huss: Huss leads the series 3-1 in meeting played in Providence’s first 4 years as a school (1989-92) when the teams were both members of the Southwestern 4A Conference.

South Point at Charlotte Christian: First meeting.

West Meck at Ashbrook: A series that began with Ashbrook’s predecessor Ashley has been dominated by the Green Wave 28-3. But West Meck has won two straight in the series – including a 14-9 victory last season at West Meck.
