If the Charlotte 49ers are to break into the win column in Friday’s 2022 home opener, they’ll be doing it without their school-leader in quarterback starts and quarterback victories.

James Foster

Charlotte head coach Will Healy announced Chris Reynolds wouldn’t play in Friday’s 7 p.m. home opener against William & Mary due to an injury he suffered in last Saturday’s season-opening 43-13 loss at Florida Atlantic.

James Foster, a redshirt junior, will start at quarterback. Foster, a former 4-star recruit who transferred to Charlotte from Texas A&M, made one start last season in a 45-13 loss at Western Kentucky.

“We’re excited to have James Foster starting,” Healy said at his weekly news conference. Chris “got banged up last week and he was able to come back and play in the second half last week. He will not play this week. We want to make sure he’s healthy. Next week (Sept. 10 at home against Maryland) looks better for him.”

Reynolds landed hard on his left, non-throwing shoulder late in the first half of last week’s loss. He ended up with 14 completions in 19 attempts for 196 yards and two touchdowns. Foster, who relieved Reynolds in each half, completed two of nine passes for 21 yards with one interception.

“I’ve got a lot of confidence in James Foster,” Healy said. “It’ll be exciting to see him play.”
