8-28-22 roundup: Pro baseball, football and soccer, High school football and boys soccer, College football, Middle school softball, Auto racing

By Richard Walker

This week will start a segment called “Monday Morning Quarterback” that wraps up the recent high school football games.

South Point defeated rival East Gaston 48-6 Friday night in Belmont. It was South Point’s 16th straight win in the rivalry. [Brian Mayhew / Carolina Top Shots]
And some trends are emerging in high school football for Cleveland, Gaston and Lincoln counties after two weeks of the season.

In Gaston County, Justin Rocquemore is poised for a record-setting career during his senior season at Cramer. And the 5-foot-10, 190-pound quarterback tied a single-game county record last Friday in the Storm’s 48-28 win at Bessemer City with seven touchdown passes.

Rocquemore tied Cherryville’s Ben Lastra and Mountain Island Charter’s Kyle Holcomb who had seven touchdown passing games in 2003 and 2016, respectively.

After Friday’s game, Rocquemore has a chance at the county’s career passing yards and passing TD records with ….. passing yards and 53 touchdown throws in his four-year career; Huss’ Zo Wallace (6,457 yards from 2016 to 2019) and Forestview’s Logan Bradley (73 TD passes from 2011 to 2013) are the current leaders.

At South Point, where the Red Raiders are off to a 6-0 start, they extended their winning streak over rival East Gaston to 16 games. Later this season, they’ll have a chance to extend their winning streaks to 17 apiece against Ashbrook (Oct. 14) and North Gaston (Oct. 28).

And at Huss, the Huskies snapped a 10-game losing streak that was second-longest in school history with a 49-42 home victory over Hibriten. Huss’ longest losing streak was 19 games from 1965 to 1966 in the first two years the school competed in the Southwestern 4A Conference.

In Cleveland County, Shelby is 0-2 for the first time since 2012 as they prepare to visit rival Crest on Friday. And Friday’s loser will have a chance at dubious history. Crest has gone 0-3 against its county rivals only three times in its history – in 1970, 1979 and 1992 – and Shelby has done so only once (2010); Both teams close out their county schedules in Oct. 28 regular season finales with Crest facing Kings Mountain and Shelby meeting Burns.

And in Lincoln County, East Lincoln and West Lincoln are off to impressive 2-0 starts. It’s the second straight 2-0 for East Lincoln and 15th in school history and it’s the second straight for West Lincoln and 18th in school history.
