Belmont Abbey College will induct 3 individuals and 1 team into the Dr. Michael P. Reidy Athletics Hall of Fame this fall.
The ceremony, to be held on Sept. 23, will honor Frank Zinke (Class of 1969), Theresa Nolan Breslin (Class of 2009), William Collins (Class of 1966) and the 1989 men’s soccer team.
Zinke is one of the leading scorers in men’s basketball history with 1,345 points. His 72.7 percent field goals shooting in his senior year of 1969 marked the second straight straight season ranked first or second in the country.
Breslin was a member of the Abbey’s first women’s lacrosse team, was a 3-time All-American and also was a Crusaders’ team captain.
Collins was an All-American baseball player, a 2-time team MVP and winner of the 1966 Marty Thomas Award. In his senior year of 1966, Collins helped the Crusaders to an 18-12 record for the school’s first winning season since the program was restarted after being discontinued during World War II.
The 1989 men’s soccer team that was coached by future record-setting Duke women’s soccer coach Robbie Church finished with a 20-4 overall record, was unbeaten in Conference Carolinas and NAIA District 26 regular season play while being ranked as high as No. 7 in the NAIA national polls. The Crusaders, who featured 3-time All-American Chris Cook, also won the Area VIII championship and became the first N.C. team to advance to the 12-team national championship tournament since Belmont Abbey’s 1966 Hall of Fame team.
Middle school golf
The Gaston County Middle School Conference will again hold golf championships this season.
Cramerton is the defending champion after the Eagles won their fifth county championship in the last six seasons a year ago.

The NASCAR Cup Series championship contenders now has 16 contenders for the title entering the first race of the playoffs, which begins next Sunday with the Southern 500 at Darlington, S.C., Raceway.
The 16 playoff drivers will compete in in the 10-race postseason, which consists of four rounds, three sets of eliminations, a lot of points and one winner-take-all championship race on Nov. 5 at Phoenix Raceway.
