The Carolina Panthers had a successful final tuneup to their preseason on Friday night in a 21-0 win over the visiting Buffalo Bills at Charlotte’s Bank of America Stadium.
Baker Mayfield, named the Panthers’ starting quarterback earlier this week, completed nine of 15 passes for 89 yards and two touchdowns in four offensive drives. It concluded Mayfield’s preseason with 13 completions in 22 attempts for 134 yards and two touchdowns in five possessions.
The only bad news were two second half injuries that had kicker Zane Gonzalez and backup quarterback Sam Darnold taken the locker room on a cart.
Gonzalez, who injured his right leg in pregame warmups in Buffalo last season, appeared to injured his right leg in the third quarter. Later in the quarter, a Buffalo defender rolled up Darnold’s left ankle. Neither player returned to action.
Now coach Matt Rhule has to cut his team’s roster from 80 players to 53 by Tuesday.
