A rematch of one of the 2021 championship game highlighted the opening day of Gaston County Conference middle school football season.

And Belmont snapped a Southwest’s county-record 31-game winning streak with a 10-8 road victory on Jake Layman’s 23-yard field goal with 11 seconds left.

The Southwest win streak that began in 2017 included two county championship game victories and two county semifinal wins over Belmont.

Here are the other opening day results:

Holbrook 60, Bessemer City 6: Savion Lindsay (6 carries, 120 yards rushing, 4 TDs, 2 2-point runs), A.J. Lindsay (4 carries, 102 yards rushing), A.J. McClain (5 of 7 for 113 yards passing, 1 TD, 1 TD run, 3 2-point passes), Dyson Britt (3 catches, 107 yards receiving, 1 TD, 2-point reception), Makylin Hinton (2-point reception), Kaveuan Pless (2-point reception), Ryland Barber (2-point reception), Tramel Bell (TD run), I’zayah Byers (TD run), Aiden Smith (2-point pass) led the Holbrook offense and Hinton, Bell and Jaiden Shuford the Holbrook defense.

Cramerton 41, W.C. Friday 0: Cooper McMillan (2 TD passes), Marcus Rhodes (3 TD runs, 1 TD reception), Kamarion Dye (1 TD run), Rex Champion (1 TD reception) and Ryan Payseur (2-point conversion) led the offense and Jordan Littlejohn, Samarion Dawkins, Trendan England and Hunter Early led the defense for Cramerton.

Grier 24, Stanley 0: Tiyan Marsh scored three touchdowns and the Knights recorded a safety.

Charlotte will play a home-and-home series with James Madison beginning with an Aug. 31, 2024 home game and concluding with a Sept. 22, 2029 road game. The 49ers also added a Sept. 13, 2025 non-conference home game against Monmouth.
